Default Seniors moving to Perth

Hi all

Any suggestions of nice areas for mum & dad to have look for a place to settle in Perth. From Perth city, any where as far as Dunsborough. We want them to find some where quiet with a nice community feel. They are both retired so have a budget but just open to ideas for suburbs for them to look at.

We are living down past Albany at the moment but won't be down here for ever. Mum and dad will arrive in Perth end of next month. No great rush for them to find any where but suggestions would be grateful to start the ball rolling!..

Thank you!

Anywhere between Perth and Dunsborough, that narrows it down then

Seriously, as they are retired seniors, my main worry for them would be medical care in years to come, and likely distance to the nearest main hospital for treatment. For specialist care (cancer etc) the local hospitals (especially in remote areas) are limited in what they can do, and it's sad to read in the news or hear from friends how their aged parent has to make the journey up to Perth daily or weekly or whatever. For that one reason alone, I would want to be within an hour's drive of Perth. You won't go far wrong looking at anywhere around Mandurah, a good community feel here and easy access to Perth by road or rail.

Thanks for that Jacqui. I know what you mean, we have to keep all that in mind. They have talked about Mandurah and I know that will be an area they are keen to explore.

Can you any recommend any particular quiet areas of Mandurah with the community feel....I'm not familiar myself with Mandurah..

Thanks again

Too many suburbs to choose from - depends what they're after - close to beach, close to shopping centre? Near a bus route? New or established homes? Greenfields (older suburb) has a lot of retirement homes, mainly near the hospital, and GP surgeries, regular buses, easy to get to train station, local shops, a community centre. College campus if they get bored and want to take up evening classes. Meadow Springs (newer suburb expanding all the time) is also popular, the RAAF retirement village is here, close to shopping centre, regular buses, lovely new park. Both suburbs just 5 minute drive to beach. Lakelands is nice, but newly-developed so not so many facilities yet and probably younger demographic. There are plenty of old folk who live right in the middle of Mandurah, but the houses are older and although it's great to be able to walk to the foreshore easily (where all the main annual events happen) it also means you get more louts hanging around after pub/nightclub chucking-out time and all the trouble that goes with that.
If they wanted somewhere really quiet, i.e. in the country away from main roads, but still close to Mandurah, all the properties are on 5 acres, so that would be a lot to look after at their age. For a standard size house and land, somewhere like Ravenswood or Austin Grove might be worth a look, new suburbs only 10 to 15 minutes from the CBD situated near the Murray River.
