you can also send cash cards (visa) you can buy the cards at the post office etc load them with what ever cash for what ever country you want, then post them if they get lost you can get a replacement.
once arrived just tell who ever you sent it to the pin code, then they can take the cash from any ATM.
with regards to sending items in the post, you can buy many items direct in australia (via the web) then get them delivered to the person your sending them to, cuts out international postage and time delays etc.
but the exchange rate at present may make that a bit costly.

Hi everyone,
thank you soooo much for all the help and advice you have given. I am really grateful and a lot more confident now, about sending a parcel to my family in Australia.
I think I will transfer money to their account for the main pressies, but will do a Christmas shop this coming week for the fun things to open.

Hi everybody,
my daughter, hubby and grandchildren moved to Melbourne in May and I would like to send some Christmas presents for them, but I have no idea how to go about it. Can anyone please let me know the cheapest way to send things to Australia. I have looked at a couple of options, but (unless I'm reading it wrong) it will cost in excess of £75 to send a parcel. If this is the case, I would rather give them the money. Talking of money, am I allowed to send cash? If I send a cheque, will they have to pay a fee to change it to dollars etc.?
I'm really sorry if this question has been raised elsewhere.
Thanks for any help.
