Is IT sector picking up a bit in Melbourne?

Is it me or do there seem to be a lot more IT jobs being advertised on the various job-boards for Melbourne lately?
Due to the circumstances being what they are here in the London IT market (UNIX in particular), we're thinking of making our move to Melbourne perhaps much sooner than we had originally planned (i.e., within the next 3 months as opposed to the next 12-18 months). I've looked periodically at the job-boards over the past year or so and they have made for depressing reading over the past few months but there do look like there are many more positions now being advertised again.
I'm wondering if this is just the normal seasonal change (i.e., the normally slow period has come to an end)?
For those in the IT industry in Melbourne (UNIX in particular), is it still very much doom and gloom over there or are there silver linings starting to form on the clouds?

A fellow Unix guy here, (in Sydney though)
Look on seek - 314 jobs posted in the last month in Melbourne.....
BUT
how many are duplicates?
how many are agencies fishing for CV's?
how many do you have ALL the skills for?
Just got back from the pub, been out with the agency lads, work is slightly better than the last few months, but there are loads of people applying too.
If you are good then get out here asap, My "new" manager has interviewed about 20 people in the last month for 4 positions, I am the only one he has hired so far. there are a lot of people over stating themselves on their CV. Companies are doing rock hard techy interviews to weed them out.

Things do seem to be picking up though. Here in Canberra my department has just hired back two contractors that they sacked last month. Strange times.

Well, I have 20 years of experience and have never failed a tech screening to date so I'm more than confident I have the skills needed. Having said that, though, this applies equally well here in the London market too but I'm struggling here so I may yet struggle there too. I'd be happy enough to at least have the opportunity to apply for real positions. It's getting a foot through the door that's all I'm hoping for.

What the IT sector is like right now is not going to help you , you need to wait til after june 30th, end of the financial year, and the start/ end of budget year for the gov departments.
Thats when we'll see the fallout from the budget, gfc, blah.
Expectations are not currently promising, but who knows, they've almost managed to talk themselves out of the recession thus far.

July is the start of a new financial year and budgets often start then. If the market does not peak then I do not know when it will get better. I hear the London market is a lot worse off right now though.
One thing a lot of people make the mistake of is to arrive in December hoping for a job. The market shuts then and does not restart properley until mid Feb when school holidays and the summer break are over.
We've just transitioned a project in Melbourne and all contractors bar one have been laid off from that team. All work is on an as needed basis and discretionary spending is blocked. Basically of the money does not have to be spent it won't be.

I think the IT industry is in pretty good shape in Melbourne, there are jobs for good, skilled people, in fact there really is a skills shortage (emphasis on skills, not applicants)
One problem is that many companies have a freeze on hiring or are making it very hard to employ people. From all reports there is absolutely shedloads of IT work that needs doing though.
We are literally drowning in work, it's affecting the quality of the delivery of services and we could probably do with 2-3x more people on our teams but we can't get more resources because of HR.

IT has always been the subject of cutbacks since y2k so I am not sure how much further companies can go without affecting service and project delivery.
Where I work we are now insourcing as it is now considered cheaper. Heaps more work but few extra bodies.
