My wife and i are moving to Queensland in August, she is a teacher and so will probably cruise into a job. I am currently working as a Molecular Biologist/ electron microscopist in england. Any advice about how to find jobs and how UK degrees are received in Oz?

Try looking on the university websites for research positions. There's university of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology.

I'm a cell biologist moving to Townsville, Tropical North Queensland.

I found the post just by searching the internet.

If you fancy TNQ then try the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville - they do some molecular biology and advertise vacancies on their website - aims.gov.au.

Also in Townsville they have the James Cook University - there may be some opportunities there for a molecular biologist - they have a Comparative Genomics Centre. www.jcu.edu.au/

I used to do electron microscopy myself but haven't seen any jobs advertised for that - it's a pretty small world! Haven't really been looking that hard though.

As for how your UK degree will be accepted, although it would have been easier for me if I had a PhD, I had a BSc, and specialist skills and experience got me through.

and also at the careers sites such as http://www.careerone.com.au/ and http://www.mycareer.com.au/ and search for molecular biology. Also go to www.csiro.au and see what CSIRO have going on in Queensland.

As for salaries, industry almost always pays more than academia, but the demands on you and your time are often greater. There are also a number of recruitment companies who specialise in science, but we haven't really looked into any of those yet.

I think New Scientist's Australian website has Ozzie jobs on it. We're off to Brisbane in April, and my partner, Matt, will be looking for work in forensics, or Biochem. He has sent out cold call letters and emails to all the addresses he found on Yellow pages website. A degree is a degree anywhere, but I've heard that English degrees, particularly in science, are well received! Good luck with your job hunting.

Hi - I know its not the same thing, but a friend of mine is a marine biologist, and she works at Queensland Museum, Southbank, Brisbane. Just a thought.
I have a BSc (hons) degree and this gave me no problems at all, if anything it was an advantage as Aussie degrees are done differently, so you have to take an extra year if you want Honours and a lot of students opt out of this.

Thanks for the info, I also have a BSc, it is good to know it is comparable with Oz qualifications.
I have previously lived overseas for 3 years and it is always daunting trying to set up in a new country, but also quite exciting!
We are not leaving UK until end of August so I still have some time before we go to pursue any possibilities
