Hi Everyone,

We are just wondering how the kids were settling into schools and what grades are they going into compared to the uk. We are hoping to be in oz beginning of oct and our son(he will be 6 in sept) will have just finished reception and will be going into grade 1 in september here in the uk. What grade will he be likely to go into in oz and is it worth putting him into school here for 3 weeks when schools go back after summer hols or keep him out. Sorry for all the questions.

I'm not sure about which grade he'll be in but I wouldn't send mine back for 3 weeks. He will just start settling back into the routine and the disruption it would cause for him isn't really worth it IMHO.

If you are going to Queensland I think he would go into grade 1 and then start grade 2 in January. They are changing all the entry dates for the new prep year but I don't think that starts till next year. I am sure someone else will tell you if this is right.

Hi Tracey,

It depends where you are going in Oz?

Take a look at this, www.eddept.wa.edu.au/ece/australia.htm

It gives information re age of entry to school in different states.
Hope this helps

QLD Current rules are: To be enrolled in Year 1 in January, children must be five years old by the end of the previous year. Under special circumstances, children may be enrolled at a younger age.

As an example, my daughter is 9yrs old and is in year 5.
Your son is currently 5 yrs old, and would therefore go into year 1 in October 2006, for the last term of year 1 (starting Oct 9), with year 2 from Jan 2007.

In WA, according to the WA website, he would begin Year 1 in Feb 2007.

In NSW Children may enter Year 1 at the beginning of the school year in NSW government schools if they turn Six on or before 31 July in that year.
Based on that, then he would be in year 1 from Jan 2007.
