Your June 9th one, is near enough the same date, but not year, as my daughter.
She turned 12 in 2008, and was in year 7 in 2008.
Her first full year of school was the pre-primary year, (called Prep in QLD or Kindergarten in NSW) and she started when she was 4 yrs 8 months old.
Thankyou.....

So in QLD my DD would be currently in Yr3?? and my DS in Yr2??
The Oz year is Jan to Dec??

My head is swimming trying to get all this clear in my mind....

Children may enter Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year in NSW government schools if they turn five on or before 31 July in that year.

Kindergarten in NSW is the year before year 1.

We were in NSW when mine (end of May birthdate) started Kindergarten at 4 yrs 8 months old, but she was just about the youngest in the class in NSW.

Here in QLD she is the middle of the class in age groups.

That depends on the school !

Some State schools get better results than Private, but in general the private schools have more rules, and with many of them having a faith based teaching process, try to instill morals, a bit more than State schools.

Before coming to Australia I would never have consider private schools.
But here, we did start her in Private, but changed to State when we moved to QLD, but pretty quickly went back to private.

Education: State v Private

Remember it varies hugely from state to state and school to school. The ACT went it's own way and introduced colleges for final years of school before university after 4 years of high school.

Here in QLD my daughters school has 4 years of Middle school (7-10) then 2 years of Senior school, before any University options.

Most QLD State schools do a 5 year High school from year 8 to 12. Followed by UNI etc.
