school leaving age
Can anyone offer advice re 16yr old coming over to oz. Will they need to go to school or will she be able to go straight into further education ie college. This would probably be in WA. Any help would be great.

In many states children have to be in full-time education until they are at least 17, but that education can be school, TAFE, or an apprenticeship at 16.

Thanks for that did think I'd read somewhere they could leave as long as they were in some form of training or education through the participation programme. Thank you

Full time school's compulsory for year 11 and 12 (age 17) unless the individual goes to TAFE full time or has release for a work apprenticeship of 25 hours a week (hard to find). A year 12 HSC certificate is pretty much demanded for every type of school leaver job. The states not in this are NT and ACT I believe.

Re: school leaving age
We are in the same situation Fiona67 as coming over to Perth with a 16 year old who would have just completed his GCSE's. I have recently posted a thread on the subject and got lots of advice which you can read. From the replies we are thinking that he will be better off going to a high school to complete years 11 & 12 but we will have to check this further re subjects etc.
