Default School ages help please.

Hi All
My three girls are 14 (dob feb 1996), 12 (dob april 1998) 10 (dob august 2000).
We are coming to Brisbane in August 2011 and they will be starting new school year in Jan 2012 . What years will they be in ??? Currently they are in yr10 (uk) yr 8 (uk) and yr 6 (uk). So it would be at the end of this school year. However it gets complicated because we came to Republic of Ireland 2 yrs ago and they all had to move back a year to fit in with age group here as they start later and finish at 18 not 16. So they are actually in 3rd yr senior, 1st year senior and 5th class primary, a yr below where they would have been. I am worried if Australia is exactly like UK they will miss that whole year they dropped back????????????

Please Help.
Thanks in Advance

In Queensland, your 14 year old would be going into Year 11 in January 2012, your 12 year old into Year 9 in January 2012 and your 10 year old into Year 7 in January 2012. But you should email schools directly and ask them as some may be willing make concessions based on your child's history and assessment.

School ages for Queensland here http://internet.faithlutheran.qld.ed...%20College.pdf

Dont worry about the year level name anyway, just put the kids with their age cohort. They wont have "missed" anything because this is a whole new system and they wont be dropping back or repeating or anything.

Great Thanks for your help.

One more question on this subject when do they start their curriculum for their state exams GCSEs or equivilent???? What year does school end??? I am hoping my eldest wont be half way through as I would feel this would put her at a disadvantage with course work curriculum etc .

Thanks a million

Year 11 is the all important year (forget all you ever knew about GCSEs, A levels etc). In most states kids starting year 11 in the Jan are either just turned 16 or just about to turn 16. This is the start of a 2 year course so kids get a year 12 certificate at the end of it and then head off to uni or TAFE or even work. Remember that the school year goes from Jan to December as well so rocking up half way through year 11 can lead to some disadvantage. If a kid cant start at the beginning of year 11, best to let them finish A levels then they can walk into uni here without any hassles.

Thanks Quoll
We will actually be starting the girls sometime between August and October (depending exactly when we arrive) they will go into yrs 6,8,10 which they will have completed here. So its really just to get to know friends school etc. Then in January they will start new school year afresh in 7, 9 and 11. Am glad about the yr 11 and 12 course. It means my eldest wont be at a disadvantage. I wont tell her the exams she is doing here wont count dont want her slacking

Thankyou all for your help
