Re: Sandown any one been good bad?
I went on Friday too.
I'm not about to move to Oz so wasn't really looking for the sort of things you are after but there seemed to be quite a lot of stands for useful bits and bobs like finances, pets and removals.
Don't know if they are very helpful though.
I actually went to find out my visa options and left more confused than when I arrived because everyone told me different things!
I can't get a skilled independent and am hoping to get a company to sponsor me when I go on my working holiday visa - some of the agents said I could try for a Regional Sponsored Migration but someone else said this is being scrapped next month, then another person advised me to go for a SIR visa, aniother said I couldn't, someone said I could try for a STNI, another said I couldn't....came away thinking none of them really know all the rules of eligibility

For example, I believed that I would not get sponsorship on a four-year temporary visa unless the company could not fill the vacancy from the local labour market.
One agent told me yesterday that was not true, but having looked at the DIMIA site again it appears it is.
Someone else told me that for one of the Regional Sponsored visas (can't remember which one), it didn't matter if your occupation was not on that state's in-demand list. They said I should still contact the appropriate state government as they would consider me on an individual basis and may think that my skills (journalist) would be useful in the 'country' areas.
Someone else told me this was rubbish and your occupation had to be on those nominated by the state.
So which is it? I have no idea - guess I'll have to go and speak to the relevant state authorities while I'm in Oz and get a definitive answer from them

Of most use to us having already rec'd our PM visa was the money transfer/FOREX info and the pension information. There are also an awful lot of shipping agents all in one place so it is a good opportunity to vet them.
Overall though it is a good place to get info on lots of different topics and get loads of free pens!

we have just got back (Sat), I think if you are just starting on the process the show is good. Go Matilda have a stand and they get excellent reviews on here, in fact I asked them for some advice (though I am using a different agent) and the lady on the stand was really helpful.
The seminar was good with loads of people asking questions

=> Not so. Labour Market Testing only applies to the Employer Nomination Scheme (a permanent employer sponsored visa category), though this LMT requirement might be dropped from 1 April 2005 - and in any event often employers can apply to the DIMIA - successfully - from the requirement to undertake LMT.
One agent told me yesterday that was not true, but having looked at the DIMIA site again it appears it is.
=> Can you provide the link?

Hi Alan,Thanks for the reply.
I looked on the first page of Booklet 11:
http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/1154.pdf
It says:
"Sponsorship by Australian or overseas businesses.
Business unable to meet their skill needs from within the Australian labour force can sponsor personnel from overseas on a temporary basis...for up to four years."
Not sure if there are any other temporary sponsored visas which don't require labour market testing?
Also, can you tell me the situation with the RSMS.
Someone told me this was going to be scrapped from next month.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dianne

Re: Sandown any one been good bad?
Dianne,
In spite of what booklet 11 says I can confirm there is no LMT requirement for long term employer sponsored visas. Indeed, the quote from the booklet doesn't say that LMT is required ... it simply notes that employers can utilise long term employer sponsored visas to meet their employment needs.
I am also not aware of the RSMS visa category being scrapped on 1 April ... that's not to say it won't be, but that until I see the legislation that removes it as a visa category I would say that it remains an available visa pathway.
Best regards.

So if I was to do casual work for, say, a newspaper while on my working holiday visa, and the company wanted to take me on long-term, this four-year visa would be possible?
I will definitely get in touch with you before I head off on my WHV in June to find out my options while I'm over there.
Thanks again,
Dianne
