Default Sand Pit

Kids love their sand pit here in the UK, but of course there's no nasties to worry about getting into the pit (except from cats, but the lid's usually on!).

So, how about sand pits in Oz? How do you stop creepy crawlies lurking on the lids or getting into the sand without making it unsafe for kids to play too?

Sensible suggestions only please - I've read your replies to other, seemingly normal questions before

well....you can put a load of rock salt in there.....but it's quite expensive so if you have a big sand pit it could be costly. We made a cover from shadecloth with some lengths of wood to weight it down - no snails / slugs / slaters or bugs of any other kind so far. Trouble is it lets in the rain. Last year we made a cover from a tarpauline and there were heaps of creepy crawlies everytime we lifted the lid back.
