Rural/remote in Victoria

Rural/remote in Victoria
Hi all,
after spending a year searching for a nice house with a few acres in the south west of WA, we have finally had a reality check: we can not afford to live here any longer.
Because we fell in love with living in a rural area (Nannup is a tiny town) we are looking at rural Victoria. Having travelled around Vic a few years ago, a few places grabbed our attention: Beechworth, Yackandandah, Castlemaine, Mansfield, Benalla. Can anyone give us some advice on what those towns are like? Preferably the good, bad and ugly. We are planning to have a look around soon, but some advice would really come in handy.
Thanks heaps!

Re: Rural/remote in Victoria
We live in Melbourne, but my brother is in Benalla and has also spent time in Beechworth. Both are really nice places to live if you want rural towns. Benalla is a bit flat, but not far to the hills if you want. Only two hours from Melbourne on the Hume, so you can go down easily enough if you want. I wouldn't call either of them remote - only rural
