Rugby returns to Perth
Match 1 - Pre Season Cup - Canterbury Bulldogs V South Sydney Rabbitohs
Friday, 25 February
Members Equity Stadium
After being starved of NRL action since 1999, Rugby League makes a huge return to Perth with two great matches in 2005. Staged at the new Members Equity Stadium in February and May the series will include a pre-season as well as a main season Premiership fixture.
While there has been much talk about the new soccer competition and the possibility of a Super 14 Union side setting up, the WA Rugby League have been working hard to re-introduce the gladiatorial game back into Perth and take advantage of the new rectangular stadium in the short term.
The new stadium will also mean that crowds will be closer than ever to the action on the field – they will literally feel the big hits as they happen.
The 2005 games are step one in the WA Rugby League’s quest to participate in the Rugby League World Cup in 2008 and to re-establish a Perth based NRL side in the future.
“There always has been a demand for the game in Perth and for the past couple of years we have been negotiating with the National Rugby League to host games here, a thrilled Geoff Baldwin exclaims. Geoff is the Chairman of WA Rugby League and passionate about getting the national game back into Western Australia.
“We are confident that the supporter base in Perth is strong and will be excited at seeing 2 to 3 matches a year for the next couple of seasons. With the groundswell of public support, I know we can establish Rugby League as a permanent fixture here.
The two matches include a pre season cup game between current premiers – Canterbury Bulldogs and one of the most successful and popular clubs in the NRL – the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Even though this will be staged on the eve of the 2005 season, the public will get a fantastic chance to see the premiers in action and experience the action close up for the first time.
The main season match will feature the New Zealand Warriors against the Cronulla Sharks. With Perth’s 50,000 ex-patriate New Zealanders, this game will attract enormous local interest.
Limited pre sales ticket will be released at the end of November and will provide an opportunity for local people to purchase series tickets with Christmas presents in mind.
Match Schedule:
Gates Open 5:00pm
Pre-Game Match 6:00pm
Kick-off 7:30pm
Tickets on sale now from Bocs Ticketing
Tickets available here

South Sydney is for those Jamie Oliver pretend to be working class types who go to 1 game a year. Doggies fans are animals who would fit in well in at a Millwall game.

The first t-shirt my missus bought (probably unwittingly) was a Bunnies top. I was proud of her.

Re: Rugby returns to Perth
I thought this was a reference to the fact that Perth, not Melbourne, had got the Super 14 franchise in 2006.
We'd be spoilt, league and rah rah in one city.
It is being announced on Friday.

Re: Rugby returns to Perth
Since the onset of the Melbourne Storm and the Warriors it became to costly to travel for reserve and third grade teams that were once a part of the Bronco`s and others, Today you pay more to go and see one game than you did to see three not to many years back.
Good luck if W.A. can field a team but unless you have a good junior comp established i dont see it getting to far again, unless of course Rupert opens up the purse strings.

League is the artform of sport. Its a game watched by people with a good palate and taste. Give it a chance Amazon and you might agree with me.

What's wrong with Aussie Rules??
I must admit it was all a bit of a mystery to me when I first got here, but I now love the game.
So much so, that Ive just renewed my membership of the Freo Dockers for a second year.. Go Freo..!!!
Having said that, I do hope we get the Super 14 franchise over here.
It'll be nice & handy for me, cos I Just live a walk away from the WACA.
Bloody hell! Try saying that after 16 beers!!!
Cheers.... John.....
