I remember a day out in Chester Town Centre (UK) eating ice cream where with the various characters present there was palpable tension in the air and a feeling that very little would have been required to set things off. We actually moved on because of it. We are wimps though!
The news last night also stated that from a tourist point of view the coast had had one of its best Easters in years all smiling faces and people having a good time not a community in fear.

I reckon Cavill Avenue on a Saturday night pretty much has that edgy about to kick off at any moment vibe perfected!

Even over the easter weekend their has been another six Armed Robberies,it seems as GC is getting bad and the police dont know who it is.
To date from the start of the this year the GC has had 50 violent roberies, well it looks as thou the GC will be setting a record that no one else wants.
My family will not go out in GC in the eve as you get approched by drunks etc and my children feel affraid and its not a nice place to be with a family

Oh and as a sidenote, whilst it's fairly unimportant in the grand scheme of things, the article posted by Creature was about a pub in Mooball. Mooball is not on the Gold Coast, it's down in NSW so just because it's in the GC Bully, doesn't mean it's on the GC. Doesn't stop the robbery and gun crime numbers being scary reading though.

My example was a shopping street on a Saturday afternoon.

another thing to take into consideration is that way crime is recorded here in au and qld according to the police and the Australian Bureau of Statistics 47% of ALL robberies are classed as Armed robbery,
detailed stats are only avaiable from 99 to 08 ( unless some one knows differently abc perhaps? )
see the attached files
now looking at that you would think foook there must be a shed load of guns in qld ?? read further into it and only 6.3% of ALL armed robberies recorded was a firearm used ??
confused/ hell yes, armed robbery to me means a robber whos armed surely?
no not by definition
Armed robbery by definition is
If the offender is or pretends to be armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument, or is in company with 1 or more other person or persons, or if, at or immediately before or immediately after the time of the robbery, the offender wounds or uses any other personal violence to any person, the offender is liable to imprisonment for life.
( taken from au criminal code )
so if one offender is armed with anything and i mean literally anything its recorded as armed robbery for all persons invloved -- one of the recent armed robberies being highlighted on here and in the press was commited with a sledge hammer ( another was bolt cutters ) - thats how they got into the premises its now been recorded as an armed robbery so the max sentance goes from 14 yrs to life,
perhaps thats why the police record crime using this method ( dont get me wrong i`d be happy to see them all locked up and throw away the key ) but if by recording almost half of all robberies as armed they get a longer sentance dished out so be it
going back to the stats available and each and every year for the 10 years of stats shown theres been an average of 1000 armed robberies recorded each year or 3 a day, or 21 a week use which ever figure you like
so is this a crime spree as suggested? or is it just a quite news week and crimes that have been recorded day in day for 10 years are currently been highlighted by the gutter press for shock value ??
for what its worth ive lived in the GC for the last 4.5 yrs and i work mostly in and around surfers ( emergency breakdowns amd repairs to the restaurants / hotels etc ) and as yet havnt seen or felt that crime was an issue here
now if you talk to my nieghbours of any of the locals about the councill and the new water bills you`ll get a hell of a response but perhaps thats because thats a real issue about living here

Two different strands to this thread IMO. Low level, nuisance drunks type irritants and the more serious robberies.
The first in my experience although we NEVER venture into Surfers is tolerable - not as bad as a typical night out in any UK town centre.
The armed robberies are a real worry - not just because I own a business which possibly be targeted. In my old life we lived in Bournemouth a coastal tourist destination with a population of about 500,000 very simular to the GC. I am certain that if there had been 19 armed robberies in the Bournemouth area in one month there would be genuine concern and debate about that statistic. For GC police to be happy with a 25% clear up rate does not fill me with confidence in their abilities to grasp the problem.
Being armed with a gun, knife, sledgehammer, crowbar or any other implement does not matter, the intimidation experienced by the victims can be life changing and should not be glibly written off as not being armed robberies.

I think there was a life changing assault for the victim not that long ago where the thugs who did it were basically let off.
A self serving justice system looking after themselves and their "clients" at the expense of the rest of society means the thugs have something of a green light.
