Usually you would just write two referrees name and address's on the application form you need to complete when you find somewhere. My property agent did not check them though.

What if:

a) you've never been a tenant before;
and/or
b) you know no one in Australia?

We E-mailed a few rental agency's and told them we have no references, but said we could offer a lump sum, they said that, that would do nicely :thumbsup:

Hi,
I would get as many references as you can.. if you have just sold a house get the estate agent to write a reference saying that your house was in good condition, if they have a brochure with a photo of the good parts of the house take that as well. previous employers character reference is also good.

Cheers

Chris

I've been looking online at properties to let and most seem to require references. What kind of references are these? Do we have to bring something from the UK? Will a bank or employer reference do?

Hi

We owned our house in the UK before leaving so didn't have any references from landlords. We asked the estate agent we sold our house throughto write a letter to say that the house was in good, clean order when it was sold. The rental agent we used in Perth seemed quite happy with this.

Good luck :)

Re: Rental references

In addition to the stuff mentioned above:

Back in the UK we chose to use a dogsitter/minder (as opposed to kennels) whenever we went on holiday.

We asked the dogsitter/minder to provide us with a reference to say that our dog was house-trained, of good temperament, clean, not a nibbler etc and we provided this reference to the real estate agent when we (successfully) applied for our first rental a week after arriving in Australia.

some would except 3 months and others 6 months, none said they would expect over the 6 months.
