Re: Remember why you went!!!
Originally posted by janeyray Seems to me that none of the British people coming over to live in Oz have lived through an Aussie winter. Well I'am talking about Perth anyway. I arrived in march (blistering heat, 43c) and since about the end of May it has been cold. I also have two Quilts on my bed and have done since May and will continue by the looks of it untill about November!!!???? I do tend to feel the cold a bit more than hubby, but even he wore a t-shirt to bed the other night!! I was NEVER this cold in the Uk. Sorry, but I wasn't. I certainly didn't have to have a quilt on me whilst watchin tv!! We are landing in Brisbane on the 29th December so by the replys I guess I don't need to take too many jumpers, and could be sweating slightly for most of our stay, there will be a couple in the case still ( well you never know!!) and I'm glad my thread got a good cheerful response, and its stopped raining you will be glad to know and its a lovely autumn day in Epping (essex) but its cold and coats are in the dry cleaners, its been a lovely summer but for some weird reason I have been dying since the middle of September to put the coats on, have the fire lit in the evenings and speaking to other friends they have all felt the same, its not right walking around at the end of September with your sunglasses on!!! (making the most of our last cold xmas day) |
when we arrived in brisbane 5 years ago now we laughed at all the locals wearing coats and jackets at night in the winter. we felt fine and happily sat outside eating dinner right through our first oz winter.
second year we had the coats and jackets on as well. do not know what the technical term is but your blood thins. as such now we find the winters bloody cold. Before we installed the reserse cycle i used to sleep in a woolly hat because my head and ears got so cold at night. why are oz houses not equipped for cold winters and hot summers. in uk, us and canada the homes are pretty much equipped for everything the climates can throw at them but oz seems to ignore the extremes ? |
most Aussie families bring out about 15 little heaters and reinact the student houses scenario - I had a great fleece I used all winter long.
A mate's fiance (in the Uk) just gave me a massive fleece and pertex shell which is too big for her - I almost said "No" - then thought "Yes" - great for Aussie winters. badge |
Same in Greece- perhaps it's the poor quality of construction plus concrete? The older stone houses retain the heat much better in winter, but are cooler in summer. I wonder if the lofts are insulated? We lined our exterior walls with polystyrene sheets, then put plaster board on top - also stops damp in the winter. :lecture:
