The spider in that picture is almost certainly the following, which is commonly mistaken for the almost exclusively outside dwelling redback.

If you look through the site, is gives you a realistic understanding of the actual threat of a redback spider which is negligible.

Sorry mate it was a redback, hence the big red stripe on it's back,did you not zoom it in?

Yeah I did have a look and I know where your coming from, but I'm still not happy with my kids playing around them until they get older.

There's loads of dead ones appearing and then disapearing, birds I take it?

Could be garden ants carrying them off. Probably birds though.
