Default Reclaiming VAT when emigrating

Does anyone know whether you can reclaim VAT when leaving the UK to emigrate to Oz.

I will be off in March & may buy a new laptop before I go, was wondering if I can claim the VAT back on the purchase when I leave??

Thanks .. Mark

Buy it from a decent shop which does the duty free stuff. Get the paperwork from them when you buy it and tehy will calculate how much you get back. As you leave (depending on airport) hand your paperwork in for a refund or post it in the Customs ad Excise box. We did it that way in Manchester and got a refund about 4 weeks later

Thanks 232, do you need to go to a duty free shop then. I was thinking of buying a dell through their internet site??

Mind you I already made my initial entry last year and have got an address & bank account out in Oz already so I guess if I get my offshore declaration sorted there should be no problems!?

Not sure if you can get a form without going to a duty free retailer as I think it might have something to do withthem taking the money off you in the first place. We thought about buying a laptop to come over here, but saved the cash and bought a desk top pc when we got here and got a better system for less money - so unless you actually need a laptop....??

Hmm sounds like that may be a better plan, thanks for the advice! I have got an older laptop that can tide me over for a while then desktop it when I am settled. Besides I have got the flights to pay for yet
