Oh you get them here too. I'd only been in our new house for 4 hours and I had one trying to sell me the cheapest Gas and Electric in South Australia.
As for the phone call, well put it this way, sometimes I'm glad I have dialup internet
You can pay for your number to be 'silent' though (not advertised), costs $2 a month I think.

We came here with equity, but used a huge chunk of it for living as hubby could not get a job initally, and as house has just sold back home, we have been paying rent, living costs here, and also mortgage and assosiated costs back home as well for last 6 months. We thought we would have a deposit for a house, but now have used so much of it and its dwindling fast, and still using our savings as our income is not enough to live on. We have cut our cloth dramatically, but hubby just clears $600 pw after tax, and rent is £330 per week, and we still have utilities, bills and living costs, so we are finding it very difficult. I have 2 kids at school, so do get family assistance but if i work part time, will loose most of it, then have to pay before/after school care, then petrol on top, so aint worthwhile, unless i get a casual cash in hand job which are hard to find. We came here 4 yrs ago and thought it was cheap to live, but now, much more expensive, and based on the strength of dollar earning its alot harder for us than back home. We also have found house prices very high, and the interest rates are through the roof. It is very much a simple life, and its a big sacrifice for us as we had a decent income back home, and we do enjoy the simple aspects but i worry as , once savings run out, we are then skint. We cant put our kids into any sports clubs, as all too expensive, and cant afford private healthcare yet and we need our teeth done and so expensive here, and i worry that long term we will not be able to survive , and it is a wonderful simple life/outdoor life but we need to live as well. I have aussie relies, and used to always think that they were overly cautious with money, and quite stringent, but now i know why as they have to be, its the only way to get by it seems based on earnings for some jobs, and cost of living. Of course we all have different jobs etc, so it does vary.

From: was Tyne and Wear, now Brisbane

I came to Australia with no equity, GBP 2,000 and no job, thankfully I had somewhere to stop, sharing with my partners relatives in a rental in Brisbane paying half of $300pw
My partner and I found a job in Brisbane within a month each, me earning $50k and my partner approx $48k (she's a teacher and the wage is a lot less then UK). We saved up, not going wild and in two weeks will be moving into our new home which we found for $285k (about GBP120), the repayments will be $830 per fortnight, so it is affordable (we'll be paying an extra $200 per fortnight to save interest). We also got the 1st home buyers which saved us $7k on initial charges.
So it can be done, just dont expect it to be any easier than the UK

Valley Road! Not originally from here (grew up in west park and adel) but moved here 3 years ago.
As far as leeds is concerned its not a bad place, quite handy for shops and stuff to do for the little ones but still England
Traffic is getting worse, theyve just started a great big bendy bus running down church lane! You can imagine how that went down with the locals!
Must admit i'd miss the park, our kids love it.
Where abouts are you in oz?
