Default Re-importing a Car into the UK

We are moving back to the UK in a couple of months, and we are a bit confused about what we need to do in order to be able to re-import our car to the UK.

We brought it with us from the UK over 12 months ago, and now we would like to take it back. I have seen mention of vehicle approval etc but is that necessary if you are re-importing?

Any help on procedure would be appreciated.

Cheers

Caroline

United Kingdom

As a returning EU citizen you are entitled to import your personal vehicle into the UK completely Tax Free if you meet the following UK DETR requirements.

What is a Personal Import?
With effect from 1 February 2001 you are a personal importer only

If the vehicle has been imported by a person entering the United Kingdom;
That person had, at the time the vehicle was imported, been normally resident in a country other than the United Kingdom for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
That person intends to become normally resident in the United Kingdom;
The vehicle has been in the possession of that person and used by him in the country where he has been normally resident for a period of at least 6 months before its importation; and
The vehicle is intended for his personal or household use in the United Kingdom Click Here for the link to the DETR home relating to vehicle imports.
Tax relief will require you to hold the vehicle for in your name for 12 months from the arrival of the car in the UK.

Modification
The vehicle will require some basic modification such as Rear Fog Lamp fitter, Fuel Intake hose change to UK narrow neck type for non leaded fuel, Speedometer changed to MPH.

SVA Inspection
The vehicle will have to undergo a SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) inspection which is essentially a more stringent MOT prior to registration.

Must be one hell of a car to bring it to Oz and back again.

With the depreciation value of a car I would guess your best bet would be to sell it and get a new one. Unless of course its a vintage or some sort of Ferarri supercar!
