hi you really do need an agent it will be the best return you will ever get for your money ( if you get the right agent) it's not just referances.

We applied as Chef for my hubby & sent the following:
Career History Document that we wrote detailing all my hubby's jobs, what hrs worked/salary earned/position held/training undertaken/promotions gained, References for every job done since leaving school in 1985 (if unavailable then covered time with stat Dec & documents from companies house explaining why no ref or if company gone bust, etc), Internal company training certificates, All City & Guilds Certificates, Food Hygiene Certificate, Stat Dec - to show what equipment/tools trained/qualified to use, Stat Dec - to cover a 9 mths period of Unemployment, & finally his YTS Certificate & transcripts.
Does that help???????

couldn't agree more with last post, just mail every piece of work/school related piece of paper you have as well as references both charctor and work related, you'll be fine if you got that so i'm told! I'm still waiting!
