Default A quick question to all of you out there in the know!!!...

My husband and I (and 2 year old daughter) are off to Brisbane end Aug/Sept and we are trying to find out if our electrical goods will work in Oz and keep coming up with conflicting answers so if anyone does know could they please enlighten us!!!

Things we are thinking about are: LCD TV, Computer, DVD and just for interest kettle, toaster etc.

Would appreciate any info please.

Thx, Sarah

Yes they should be fine as they run on 240v just like here. In some cases you may need to run your TV through a video to get sound, but most of the new TV's will work just fine.

Only thing you will need to do is change the plugs. Also take a UK adaptor just in case you need one.

Some of those multi-socket extension leads - the sort you can plug three or four applicances into. Then a UK-Aus adapter on the end, the sort you take on holiday! - to plug into the actual wall socket.

Apart from a possible problem wih the TV, everything else will work fine

Kettles and toasters are cheap as chips here, so unless it's a top of the range item I wouldn't bother bringing it.

To give you an idea current sale now on: Russell Hobbs Kettle (one of the better ones around) $36 or approx 14 pounds 25 p but many others can be half that price. Admittedly full price on top of range might be as much as 40 pounds.

Instead of going to the expense of buying UK-Aus adapters, you are better waiting till you get here and buy Aussie plugs and replace the plug on the multi socket extension leads......the problem is that the adapters only have TWO prongs on them.....so if your appliance has an earth on it(the third prong) then you get zapped everytime you touch the bloody applaince, as it is not earthed

Yes- I'd agree with that. Unless you're going to bring it in your suitcase (which i did with my iron - then changed the plug here) i wouldn't bother. You need a kettle as soon as you move into your rental - not have to wait the 12 weeks or so before it gets here!. We bought new and now have a spare!

We shipped the toaster, but now its arrived (complete with old crumbs from UK Yuck)- it looks strangely "old" next to my new kettle and microwave! wish i'd bought new toaster also.

Lamps - we shipped those - but until they arrived - hubby had to read his book in bed each night by torchlight!

Depends what you want to do....think about all these things before you come - can you live without these things for 12 weeks til your stuff arrives or do you want to replace.

We shipped hi-fi, dvd etc and all work fine. We gave away pc to parents and taught them how to E Mail - we bought new laptop before we came and brought inhand luggage.
We didn't ship TV but bought new here.
So I'm here with my new LCD Tv (nice) and my crappy old toaster (horrid!) :scared:

Hope this helps,

L-j xx
