Question for UK police officers who come to WA
Was reading this story (http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/stor...9-2761,00.html) over the weekend.
Did any of you come over and quit fairly soon after joining? If so, why? Anyone stayed in?

Re: Question for UK police officers who come to WA
From what I can gather they don't 'tie you in' for a certain period. Great way for a copper to get a visa for over here. They wouldn't get one otherwise and then once here, they can leave !

Re: Question for UK police officers who come to WA
First of all the article is taking about the Force as a whole, it is the largest Police jurastiction in the world so it'll have it's fair share of leavers. Many UK Forces are experiencing the same problem but mainly due to retirements (big recruitment drives in the 70's which tailed off in the 80's, 90's & 00's) as all their cops are hitting 30 years service and retiring (or moving to WAPOL & SAPOL).
If that's any currently service officers intention then to be honest they should really think twice. First of all your taking away the opportunity away from someone who actually wants to come here and stay with the job doing policing in Oz - good on em I say, there can never be enough coppers !
Also WAPOL have been thinking about a clause that would force you to replay your training costs which is around $50k for a DEAT if you quit within a specific time frame (that's what the Direct Entrants from the UK are called and the $80k - $100k in the article is for brand new recruits) . Other Forces like SAPOL have an agreement with DIMA that you are tied to their employment for 2 years, quit and your visa can be cancelled (I believe as employment is a requirement of your visa). If more people start taking "the proverbial" maybe WAPOL will follow suit (it's a Local Government / DIMA agreement).
The fact they don't currently do this is why so many UK cops have chosen WAPOL. After all the money isn't that great, the job is unrewarding but isn't that why you all do it?
My wife will be staying in, it's what she did in the UK and it's the reason were back here now (tho the training they get leaves a lot to be desired !)
There is a police specific forum which has many cops who are going through the process of coming to Oz: http://www.************.com/ (you must register to be able to see posts).
