Swissotel Merchant Court is a nice hotel, we lived there for a fortnight when we first arrived in Singapore, but it's now been pretty much surrounded by a shopping mall. Clarke Quay - the quay it's on - has also changed alarmingly in that time and lost a lot of character but I have to be honest and say it's totally regenerated the area. Tons more bars and restaurants and very busy.

There is a lot of building work on Sentosa. There always is, but at the moment they're building one of the Integrated Resorts (i.e., casinos) there. I believe it's due to open soon. They're building the other one on the mainland at Marina Bay; that's another huge building site. Actually Singapore is always one big building site.

I really do recommend all you stopover folks get off the beaten track and see the real Singapore as well as the glitz. I love it but in places it is far from clean. I did voluntary work with some of the poorest families and it was a real eye-opener.

Don't forget to take a walk up Geylang Road at night for fantastic food and people-watching. Hookers, gangsters, drug-dealers...

That's assuming the OP meant tourist visa for Singapore, and their Aussie visa is sorted.
