OK, I'm a smoker but fully intend to quit when we start our new life down under!
Out of curiosity, I wondered how much a pack of 20 say, Marlboro Reds, costs in OZ???
Had heard a rumour they cost more than UK, is this true?

Not sure about Marlborough, but i smoke Benson and Hedges. They sell them in packs of 25s here which cost me anything between $9.50 - $11.50 depending where i buy. I am giving it up again next week!
I would suggest NOT attempting it when you first arrive as life will be very stressful to start with. Wait till you are more settled otherwise you might become an axe murderer (i would have!!)

Since we arrived in oz i started smoking some fags called HOLIDAY they come in packs of 20, 30 and 50 and you can get them in different strengths i pay about $16.50 for the 50 pack.............very cheap....so at that price it's hard to think about giving up

Peter Jacksons tend to be the most popular brand in Oz, not bad quality and fairly cheap. Holidays if I recall are really thin, a bit like smoking a straw.
Good luck with giving up. I plan to give up when we get to Oz, but like Linda said, best to get the stress out of the way first.

While looking into some tax aspects earlier today, I came across these figures:
Recommended retail prices of popular brands, September 2005
Cigarettes : Per pack : Tax % of rrp inc GST
Longbeach 40s : $15.00 : 70% of which is Tax
Peter Jackson 30s : $11.85 : 67% is tax
Winfield 25s : $10.50 : 66% is tax

and an interesting comparison:
Number of cigarettes that can be bought for the price of a Big Mac, October 2005
You can buy 9 x Peter Jackson cigarette's for the same price as a Big Mac (based on the cost of a 30 pack)
Australian Retail Tobacconist Aug/Sept 2005 and McDonalds head office
