Default A question for pointy heads

I've just spent a confusing hour trying to figure out what ADSL / phone package to use for our new house in Brisbane.

It looks like its not the best time to try and choose, as every provider is in the middle of transitioning from ADSL to ADSL2+ .

Having trawled my way through the iiNet, OptusNet, aaNet websites, and reading the discussion forums on whirlpool.net.au my brain has finally fused. Does anyone feel clued up enough on this, and what the telcos are doing to offer an opinion?

Obviously saying wait and see isn't an option, or our new house won't have any broadband . But then again, I don't want to sign up with the one muppet company that are still trying to spell ADSL2.

I assume anyone who could understand all this jargon is probably asleep now in their oxygen tent, but just on the off-chance (*pleeeaassee*). I really can't be arsed reading that stuff anymore.

Cheers,
ADL

I don't think pigeons could carry the amount of crap that I want to post.

So in your honest opinion Bix, should I go with an ISP whos in the process of upgrading to ADSL2+ with VoiP, or just stick with an ISP offering ADSL with the possibility of ADSL2+ but no mention of Voip offers?

Its a tough one isn't it....

My opinion - straight ADSL.
ADSL2 is new hat and expensive.
Let it settle a bit first.

it's quick of your exchange is dslam enabled which most of perth either is or willbe within the next 6 months so long as Telstra stops blocking the installation.

I'm with iinet which seems to be the best deal in Perth, super fast download speeds and free voice over ip phone line which gives you a second phone number and extremely cheapo calls to the UK - 5c/min without having to fart round with a calling card.

check out www.iinet.net.au they are doing a deal now where if you sign up for 2 4 months they waive the installation fee

I signed up with OzEmail (part of iinet) in our last place with a 1500/12000 package and would have got ADSL too pretty soon when it's ready. But then I moved house and this started an unbelivable series of mis-events in terms of customer services. I can't be bothered to go into detail, other than to say I requested they move my service to my new house and it took them over 3 weeks to respond to that (and by respond, I mean they sent an email saying "I see this is in hand now. Thanks for contacting OzEmail customer services" ). Two weeks further on, I'm no further on with them. I've already told them to stick it up their jacksie but that didn't stop them taking the direct debit out the bank

I'm with AAPT now.

Its what they call geeks here. I suppose its the equivalent to 'Tefal Heads' in the UK (if you remember that advert from years ago)

Wmoore/Steve&Claire: On reading the whirlpool site I see lots of complaints about iiNet since their buy out of Ozemail. It looks like their customer service department wasn't up to the job. Nor were their pointy heads up to the task of merging the system. I'm still interested in iiNet, but I'd like to see how they "improve".

Spalen: I'll pm you my email addy. Oh, and Adsl2 is the new version of ADSL1... hope that helps No seriously ADSL1 had the peak potential to only ever reach 8mbs (most of us on broadband would be using 0.5 to 1.5 Mbs). Anyway, ADSL2 has the potential starting speed of 20Mbs, and so therefore, as no-one ever uses that amount, VoiP is important to get people to use that much capacity.

Bix: Adsl2 is going to be alot cheaper than ADSL1. In fact so much so, that companies like Optusnet are transfering their existing customers over to ADSL2 and giving them increased speeds, increased download limits and reduced bills, without even asking them. You actually have to ask them NOT to be transferred over to ADSL2. And why would you? It gives your ADSL1 modem the chance to stretch its legs up to 8Mbs, and if you really need it, go and buy an ADSL2 modem and get 20Mbs. Those 'specialist' movies you like about Bones will download so much faster.

See this: Optus Direct

Speed increases and price decreases

Thats enough pointy head talk for tonight

Cheers,
ADL
