you walk into the local test centre, pay for and pass the theory test. At this point you mention that you have held a PROVISIONAL licence in the UK and produce the said licence, they look confused (as usual) and call a supervisor who also looks confused and grants you a full australian OPEN licence. This happened to someone I know who tried and tried to pass the UK practical test but always failed on one little thing, they could drive but just could not pass the test. When I took them down to sit the theory test we just wanted to get a learners permit so the person could start driving here and eventually take the driving test and hopefully pass but now that is all out of the way thanks to some wording issues. The British call a learner driver a PROVISIONAL driver and the Australians call someone who has just passed the test a PROVISIONAL driver, with me;) I have also heard of Car drivers being given a HGV licence here due to similar Vehicle class codes :) |
Re: Question about driving licence.
Hi
Does anyone know whether you have to take the practical test in WA, or is it just the eye test and theory to take? I wouldn't stand a chance of passing the practical again !!!!!! Too many bad habits!! Thanks |
Re: Question about driving licence.
in WA you dont take a theory test - you just take your old licence in & they swap it for a aussie one - they do an eye test & take a photo tho

Re: Question about driving licence.
I heard somewhere, that you have to do a practical test in South Australia.

NSW online theory test
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/...est/index.html Used this to practice but there are some differences with QLD. QLD highway code book can be downloaded....... http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/L...drive_yourkeys |

The main differences from the UK highway code I found was distances to be kept from road trains and all the different sorts of pedestrian crossings like wombat crossings and stuff :D

Dave Don't rely on what you've "heard somewhere" - practical tests are not required in South Australia for UK licence holders: http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/licen..._residents.asp Jeremy |

Re: Question about driving licence.
As it happens I do have the info for NSW on my website:
If you have held your UK driver licence for less than 12 months, you will be issued a NSW provisional P1 licence. If you have held your driver licence for more than 12 months but less than three years, a provisional P2 licence will be issued. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/...l_drivers.html So the answer, arkon, is NO, it won't work, in NSW. But it might in another State :) |

Driving on your Brit licence here , it doesn't matter for address things, like where to send your speeding fine to here in Aus. You do not need an Australian address on your British licence. The licence plate is all they need to trace the vehicle's address for them to send your fine to you - I had plenty of speeding fines, no seat belt etc( by both being stopped by police on the road and producing my British licence , and by cameras)while driving on my Brit licence here in the past ( I drove for years on my British licence with a Brit address on it of course) . Good thing they can't put points on your Brit licence. But what they can do though, when you do apply for a QLD licence the points you have accumulated (if they haven't expired time you apply for a QLD one) they can be put onto your new QLD licence. You don't need a QLD licence if you are on a business visa ( unless you want one) . You can drive on your Uk licence for as long as you want (unless they have changed this very recently) PR's and citizens by law should get a QLD one within three months of residing in the state to legally drive. Although it's a good idea to have one, because you can't sneeze in this country without ID - ie you need Id for so many things like posting a parcel, opening accounts etc , and carrying a passport around is not ideal. Unless you want to get an 18 plus card, which I did for the usual ID. regarding the DVLA, agree with Timber floor - don't tell them anything - unless you want to that is . You may find that you can't keep your British licence valid if you're no longer residing( have a British address) in Britain anymore. cheers :) |
