Default QLD- cheapest Internet provider ?

Perhaps a question for ABC Diamond, but all answers appreciated.

I am looking for the cheapest internet provider in the Brisbane area. Like all ex-pats we will be using it very often for sending emails and webcam to family and friends.

I believe internet in Oz is different as it is based on bytes used not on time online. Were currently signed to EsatBT who give me 150 hours anytime of the day for £20 per month which is excellent - is there anything simlair in QLD ?

Many thanks.

Bondipom is good for Broadband info,
but this website, (that i got from him) is good for comparisons.

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

I am currently trying to get opinions on aanet, they have a 512/128 plan for $35 for the first 1 Gb then $4per Gb after that.

They also have a 1500/256 for $65 for 4Gb then $4 per Gb after that.

The cheapest seems to be aanet 256/64 for $25 pm with 1Gb BUT $40 per Gb after that.
A different plan is aanet 256/64 for $35 pm with 6Gb with $4 per GB.

Testra do a 256/64 with unlimited GB for $59.95pm. I am on that one but looking to change soon

aaNet do not cover the entire country.

Be very wary with those 200mb Broadband plans !

Make sure you stay within the 200mb limit

iPrimus charge an extra $154.00 per Gb after the first 200mb

Most others charge between $4 and $40, but with some around the $150.

Swiftel charge $28.95 pm for their 200mb plan with $110 for extra 1Gb
But if you go in the $39 plan, you get 1GB included, with extra Gb's at only $5 each.

Bottom line is that you NEED to now how much you will use.

We were with Dodo ( can't get the ad out of my head now!) but changed to optus. They include 100 free local calls and I pay $21.95 per month for the internet unlimited hours. We use it a lot and haven't gone over yet.

Rememebr out here you have to pay for the local call to connect, so when we were with Dodo we paid an extra $17 just for the calls to connect. With Optus 100 calls are free so it works out cheaper. Also we found the provider is better.

We can't get Broadband here not even the ADSL, if I could I would as you then have no call charges on top so probably works out cheaper anyway.

Swiftel's price per meg over the limit also make them much better value compared to Hellstra and Optus. 200mgs may seem a bit but it is not. I recommend 1 GB unless you are very light user. Files sharers should consider 5 Gbs upwards.

IInet and internode are 2 other providers with a reasonable reputation and price.

Personally I wouldn't give a company called DODO much life and you'd have to have that in your e-mail address if you don't have your own domain:scared: .

Avoid Telstra because they are a textbook on how not to treat customers.

ROFL. I get close to that for $44 US a month. No usage fees at all.

The only thing I'm going to miss about America.

Apart from Arbys and buffalo wings.

Daft question but...

If you owned your own server and broadband kit, could you strike a deal up with the phone company , ie no isp etc, just pure internet connection always on...

Its gonna come it must do,

I have 5 computers all on 1mb broadband router, server and upload tons, does the bandwidth issue they give you apply to downloads or also uploads ??

If you set up a home system, and did a deal how feasible would it be, surely you could just connect via internet explorer and use ftp for file transfer, get a free email acct via your server side and enjoy FAST connections!!!

IDEALIST huh
