Hello,

What a coincidence, I am doing my degree with the OU too! Just received my course materials!

How did you find it? I am a bit scared because 90% is home study, the other 10%, tutorials... So it needs extra commitment.

The good thing is that I have a friend who is a Clinical Psychologist so she will always be there for extra advice/support.

I just wanted to have an idea of the profession downunder and some post-graduate opportunities for students with a UK degree.

---

Quoll,

I have sent you a PM.

Regards

Regulation for psychs is quite stringent here - a good guide is to look at what the BPS require for chartered psychs because it is going to be similar here. At the moment registration requires 4 years of study in psychology for an internship and then your internship requires 100 hours of supervision over 2 years (that is our board anyway and they are trying to get them in line nationally) for unconditional registration. You may be able to fight to get a UK psych honours considered an equivalent to 4th year otherwise a postgrad diploma or, preferably a masters (they are talking about making it 5 years study so the masters would cover it) in your particular discipline would cover the years of study bit. If you could get to be a chartered psych in UK then you would have no trouble, from a professional point of view, transferring to Aus practice.

There are always jobs for psychs but not sure that it is on the MODL list of occupations for visa purposes though as it is the course of choice for loads of Aussie students.

One dificulty is the sheer number of psychology graduates.

In the UK you would not be considered for a master's degree unless you have at least a 2.1 and a job as a clinical psychologist is like hen's teeth.

A Phd is almost mandatory for a career in psychology.. Most graduates need to work for a long time as a psychology assistant, almost on a voluntary basis, to build up their CV.

I do not know how similar the Australian system is in this respect.

Getting that way here - although the students are going through Masters in droves - it's a really popular study option but if you have the quals there are plenty of jobs around. At the moment you dont need the PhD but I can see it going that way - in line with the US. It is 4 years study for registration at the moment but the APS is pushing for 5 which is at least Masters. Lots of psychs in private practice here and making a lot of $$$ too.

I think we actually have more psychs per head of population than anywhere else in the world

You can do year 12 psych units, yes but they dont count for anything in terms of training to be a psychologist afaik.
