To encourage people to take out health insurance when they are still young, the federal government has imposed a loading of 2% of premium for every year you are over 30. For new migrants, this loading is waived if they take out insurance in the first year.

Hope this makes sense.

Didn't know that and too late now as we've been here over a year.

What's everyone's views?

And who know's how this 1% thing works once you hit it... does it make it more worth while to have private health insurance as you are paying 1% anyway?

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????
Wouldnt be without it my wife needed an operation at xmas it was done the same day worth every penny or cent if you like and i watch them go for it

Problem is if we are trying to get the insurance that covers the 1% you lose anyway but then you pay 2% loading for every year over 30 to get the 1% we will have to pay a 12% loading... all very confusing.

We've got kids and teeth and we must sign up by the beginning of November as one year since PR.

Been looking for good cover but on extras can only find partial dentist/orthodontics cover and costs seem to be around $500 per month including only basic hospital cover. Think I'm doing something wrong? We're in our 40's with not a lot of cash - any advice?

You can get dental cover only, can't find the provider i was looking at at the moment though

We don't have private health and have never had a problem with any of the life saving surgery hubby has had this year. Also all of his rehab has been on medicare with no waiting lists as it is an emergency. If we'd have gone in as a private patient and had to pay the "gaps" our house would be up for sale as we speak. If we were paying for private health at the moment the house would be up for sale as we speak....

It is however essential to pay for ambulance cover.....................

Ambulance coverage

Just one trip in an ambulance can cost between AUD$670 to over $5,000, if an air ambulance is necessary.

Obtaining an Ambulance Services Victoria membership covers you, for a minimal fee, for all treatment and transport by the ambulance service, Australia-wide.

Ambulance cover is not usually part of health insurance policies, however most private health insurance policies will reimburse your ambulance membership up to 100 per cent.

Contact the St. John Ambulance service to arrange a single or family membership by calling (03) 9848 0808, or log on to www.ambulance.vic.gov.au. Information on the ambulance service across regional Victoria is also available on this website.

Queenslanders dont pay Ambulance fees on account of living in a banana rich state.

its part of your electricity bill ( dont ask how that works ) in Qld so you need never worry about being left at the scene of a car crash with a broken leg because you left your Eftpos card at home in Queensland. Just flourish your electric bill and your be-sirened taxi to hospital will whisk you merrily on your way.

We're with HBA. You can get a basic hospital cover plus General Extras with them for around $165 a month. That amount is inclusive of the full 30% rebate you get from the government.

I don't know of any plan that will pay 100% of dental/orthodontic fees. There may be some around but you'd be paying a very high premium for them.

Think problem is if we set foot outside of QLD as they don't have a reciprocal agreement anymore with other states so make sure you get taxi elsewhere.
