Default PR Card

Dear All,

Why they don't have anything like PR Card for Australian permenant residents? Canada have something called PR Card for Canadian permenant residents.

If somebody is unable to qualify for driving licence test (computer based) then apparently he is not eligible to obtain any identification document from Australian Government???

Regards,
SMHB

Not sure why. It'd make a lot of sense, and would be easier to carry around than your passport.

The "green card" the US issues is a credit card sized thing that is easy to lug around in your wallet.

There is an over 18 ID card available. Mainly so that non drivers could prove age when going into pubs.

There was a move to intruduce a proper ID card some years ago, but it did not prove popular with the public, so its plans were abandoned.

As ABC says, you can get an Over 18 card from the Drivers Licence authorities in each state, which fulfils the same function as a Drivers Licence but for non-drivers, and requires the same amount of ID (to get one).

Medicare Cards are another acceptable form of ID.

It's not often you need to prove you have PR once the initial stuff, like Medicare/Bank accounts are sorted. I was never, ever asked by anyone (not even by employers) to show them my passport to prove my status.
