The 'white australia' aspect of it is down to the language used and how a word, a statement or a an implied phrase can change the whole meaning of someones words.
During the course of this topic you decided to berate someone for using Paki and my question, a genuine question, is WHERE is this down as being racist or inappropiate when it IS commonly used in public media in Australia?
I think the other terms were berated (snipped from quote) and the term paki (don't like the term) was totally ignored so not sure of the reasoning except as you say that the term is more acceptable in Australia

I've already answered your question. It isn't really on topic. You might be happy enough to use the word, but where would you draw the line? Is it only when you are offended? Do you not consider the effect of your words upon others before you use them, or is that unimportant because you don't find it offensive?

Well, now you have totally qualified my earlier post.

I stated that I do NOT use the term due to my upbringing in UK. So you DO NOT read peoples posts before you start giving them grief. Just what is the point of you contributing to these forums if all your posts are berating others wrongly and then being defensive when taken to task for it?

My genuine question has not been answered, WHO decides what IS or IS NOT appropriate?? I appreciate it is not easy, but I would always caution against taking others to task for something which can be very subjective.

You are so single minded and so self believing that what YOU say is correct that you give no consideration to others, you offer no help, you have nothing positive to give to people asking for help. I said it before and I say it again, why on earth do you do it? Whats wrong with you?

I did read your post actually, and you're one to talk with jumping into threads with a purely aggressive attitude & a determination to be right - without even considering that you might not be.

As for who decides what is offensive, any individual can decide something is offensive. In BEs case, there are site rules (which I'm seriously doubting you've bothered to read) which dictate what can & cannot be posted.

You can knock off the personal attacks too. That is certainly against BE posting rules.

If you feel you have a grievance with moderation on these forums then I suggest you take it up privately rather than make a personal attack on the forum. (Incidentally, a breach of two site rules)

As to your question, WE decide what is appropriate and what is not, based on the site rules which I suggest you take a moment to read

Moderators have opinions too, you know!

Right, both of you have made a grave error in assuming that I did NOT read the site rules, I specifically DID read them before answering them because, AS I KEEP ASKING they are not confined enough to provide guidance.

I will accept the personal attack but that was based on the sheer frustration at mrsgreenstar76's continual negative assumptions of others. By all means Mitzyboy stand up for a fellow moderator but when you do so ensure that you are doing so out of fairness and not misguided loyalty. I am not the only one who has noticed mrsgreenstar76's attitude on this post and others and have had private messages to that effect.
Look closely, read closely and DO NOT make incorrect assumptions about me because now YOU TWO are making a personal attack on my intelligence. You can give but not take......now thats not very Moderator of you is it? Oh, and the 'WE will decide' is an absolute cop out. We all think different and act different but if we do not know how YOU treat life then how can WE act on your lack of guidance?

I think this thread is losing the plot again - I was interested in following a debate about protests against the 457 visa, but it has now come down to what is and isn't allowed to be said.

We all know terms that are likely to cause offence. We also at times use terms we don't consider offensive but someone else might. If we take time to consider what we say before we say it, it would be better for all. If in doubt - don't say it.

I agree...I apologise to those on this thread who have genuinely tried to contribute and assist the OP. I should not have let my frustrations with one poster drag this thread down, I am sorry to all.

Okay, mod hat on.

No-one has attacked your intelligence. However, I will suggest that you calm down. This is not the first thread where you have just launched into it being extremely aggressive.

First I'll deal with this issue of the rules not being clear enough. Well, for a start off, not many others seem to have difficulty with this. Next, let's have a look at it.

2. Inappropriate Language/Personal Attacks
There may be places where sexually explicit, racist, obscene or vulgar language, graphics or behavior is appropriate however BritishExpats.com is NOT one of them. We do not alllow graphics that contain nude body parts, sexually-orientated or violent acts. Should anyone use inappropriate language, start a personal attack, or engage in hate speech, they will be barred from all further discussions.
That doesn't seem too vague. Don't use racist, sexually explicit, obscene or vulgar language. Not too difficult.

1. Personal Attacks
BritishExpats.com is an interactive site, and everyone who participates is "in it together", please treat others the way you wish to be treated. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully ... without insult or personal attack.
You've been told about this & your first reaction is to attack another mod for pointing this out to you.

Let's go onto the next point.

15. Moderator Actions
Discussions about moderator or administrator actions are welcome in email, or local private messages, but should not be discussed in public forums. This is out of respect for the members, moderators and policy involved.
You have also been told how to deal with any issues you have with moderator actions. You have now broken at least two site rules (three if you count the personal attack part in rule number two, but we'll keep it as two).

Now, you have been told to knock it off. If you persist breaking the rules, then you will lose your posting privileges for a while.

It may not be offensive to you or certain Aussie's but it is offensive in Britain and this site is full of British people.

I apologised to the whole thread.....you as a moderator should of seen that and recognised that.
But no, YOU decided to carry on? Why?

Tell you what, do what you have the POWER to do because this is why you do this, you are acting as a governor and not a moderator.
I am getting a lot of messages about you because everyone else can see you for what you do. Crack on do your power thing and enjoy it......I am sure it will make you very happy.
