Question Postage

Hi, can anyone give me any advice on sending things via Australia Post back to the UK so that it doesn't incur import duty. We sent my son (who lives in London) a hard drive that we had loaded with family photos etc. We marked on the pack that it was a gift and as the hard drive was quite old we only put a value on it of $20. However, it was stopped by UK customs and he had to pay I think about 30 pounds to get it delivered. The hard drive wasn't even worth that much. I've been told that there is something I should write on the parcel but for the life of me I can't remember what. Any help would be appreciated.
