post graduate study (MA) government funding????? agent advice??
Hey
Hope someone may be able to offer some advice.
Really wanted to do an MA here before moving to OZ, but a lot of people feel that it is better to get an australian qualification if possible as I am planning to move there permanently.
I have been looking into the cost of an MA and found the following statement on the university website:
Unless the student is an international or Australian full-fee paying student, the research student will be at the university on a funded place. A funded place means that students are exempt from paying the Student Contribution Amount and their tuition costs are funded by the Commonwealth Government.
I will be going over on an STNI 137 which is a PR visa, would this funding apply to me?????
I'm not sure it would be something I would do straight away anyway, but it would be nice to know where I stood with this eg would I need to be a PR for a certain period of time before I applied for a course?
Any advice would be great

I am on a PR visa and looked in to doing a uni course - there are very few courses that attract govt funding, aside from topics like teaching/nursing. Generally speaking, if you want to do a masters you will pay for it yourself.
The only advantage of PR is that you pay Australian level fees instead of international ones. On the down-side, you don't qualify for any student loan, so you need the money upfront. (Or the balls to take out a bank loan for it!)
If you can be flexible about exact course, then some are cheaper than others, depending on what the uni demands and what field the course is in - law, accounting etc cost more than e.g. history or english.
Good luck!

I'm currently doing a masters in Aus. This is what I know about it. You don't qualify for FEE-HELP which is an interest free loan unless you're a citizen. So PR must fund him/herself. A qualification from Aus is much better than from a foreign country generally, but I think a UK qual is generally considered OK provided its been validated by an approved authority such as NOOSR.
