Portable aircon?

Portable aircon?
Does anyone have any experience of using portable aircon? Are they any good? We're renting, so we can't get your usual aircon installed. We've just got ceiling fans and the alternative will be to live down the mall (with my two kids) when the really hot weather comes.
Thankyou!

Re: Portable aircon?
Hiya larry,
try buying a window air conditoner - "TECO" do a "Skinny", mount brackets and clamps onto the window - no drilling / no screwing, it all fits inside the room ( don't have to break the window to fit it through!!!), we've had the same prob for our nippers in our rental ( proper air con in main bed, but none in the other beds), anyway, it costs $800, you can get them for $700ish.
12,000 BTU's / 3KW - nice and cool!!!
You can then take it with you / sell it at a later date when you've done with it.
Hope this helps.
( Bought ours from 'retravision', don't know if they are in Perth).

hi larissa, try bunnings for an aircon unit which just needs a hole in the wall for a tube to go through (like a tumble drier) they are about $850 but no need to pay anyone to fit it and take it with you. think they are 1.5 hp?

Thanks a million for all your replies. We're just waiting for our bond interest cheque to turn up (mistakenly sent to the UK ) and then we can splash out, they aren't that cheap are they!

Portable Air Conditioners at "The Good Guys" this week:
Dimplex 2.638kW 1hp for $699 (less for cash)
or
DeLongi 2.637kW 1hp for $1,399 (less for cash)
Don't mistake the Evaporative Coolers for Air Conditioners though
If you use the small hp ones in a large room, they have to work really hard and the motors will not last long.
Recommemded room sizes are:
2.0kW = 14.0 sqm
2.5kW = 17.0 sqm
3.5kW = 24.0 sqm
4.0kW = 27.5 sqm
4.5kW = 31.0 sqm
5.0kW = 34.5 sqm
..
10 kW = 70.0 sqm
Based on 35C, insulated ceilings and West facing windows.
