Question Pools without walls.

Hi all,

Just read an old thread that Pools built after 1990 have to be fenced by law in Oz.
can anyone tell me whether netting is allowed instead?

Don't know for sure but if you're going to have netting why not fencing looks slighty neater and won't wear down?

I hear that as from April 1st all pools have to be used without water for both safety and conservation reasons.

There are very specific government standards and regulations, including installing and maintaining pool fences, self-closing and self-latching gates and other safety measures covering the entire pool enclosure area – no matter when they were built. If you own a pool you must have child-resistant barriers consisting of fencing and/or child-safe windows and doors on your house. They can and will inspect it all too and can fine you if you're found to be in violation of the law.

QUEENSLAND - Pre 1991 pools
Q. If I have an old swimming pool, do I need to have a pool fence around it?

A. Yes. Since 1991, the pool fencing laws have required a swimming pool, regardless of when the pool was installed, to have a pool fence constructed around it, unless the council has granted an exemption.

Any exemption currently in place becomes invalid on change of ownership, or status of the exemption.

We are going through this at the moment. We have bought a house with a pool & the fencing is not up to code. We are under notice from the council to have it done & we will be fined if it is not. We knew this when we bought the house & got a good discount because of it. We want to get it done anyway as we have a 2yo & would not take any risks. The council inspector has been very helpful & shown us what we need to do. I think most pool fencing is really ugly so we are going for a brushwood & glass fencing arrangement, looks really good. It's costing about 20% more than standard pool fencing.

This law also includes the portable spa pools as well even if they have a locklable lid.

And paddling pools over a certain depth , I am being serious.

Best bet is to contact local council/certification board before you do buy or build pool, that way your sure what will be required.

Our local council pool inspector has been really helpful & practical. Definitely worth contacting them.

Our new place complys with regs as it has self latching doors (but no pool fence). However try telling that to my littlest, who's 4, won't tolerate being inside, and when out is fascinated by the pool. He's not up to keeping himself afloat yet and has already fallen in once. Fortunately when he's up to his antics we never stray further than the kitchen window. My missus jumped in and hauled him out. Our glass fence should be done in 2 weeks and hoepfully State Swim will have him swimming in not much longer than that. Please be careful all of you though, it only takes a few seconds.

Hi,
Yeh, I'm not convinced fencing is totally safe anyway. Having had a pool before overseas and doing the job I do, I have heard of numerous occasions where kiddies have managed to somehow get through/over the fencing.
We had a thick, blue nylon net which was attached to hooks embedded in the pool surround. It was strong enough to hold a german shepherd ( ) , so we knew it was safe for the kids.
