Re: Is a pool really worth it?
In my 27 (?) years here, we've never had, wanted or needed a pool - but then we've always lived only a short walk from the beach.
I'd hazard a guess that it's only really worth it if you have kids. Once the kids grow up and leave home, you'll soon get fed up of cleaning and maintaining it - particularly if it rarely gets used. We know of a few people who have had theirs filled in. I'd certainly never buy a house that had one. It would put me right off. |
Re: Is a pool really worth it?
Last time we were in Sydney, we asked our rellies and their friends about this(mainly all 30/40s with kids under 12) and it was a resounding 'yes' to having a pool. If we can afford it, we've definately having one.
People we asked said getting to the beaches can be abit of a nightmare in the Summer due to the traffic, so a pool can be a godsend. Those who don't have pools said it was because they don't have the space or can't afford it. My SIL has one of those big temporary pools put up in their garden during Summer, which is a cheaper option. Nicky |

[/QUOTE] I totally agree with the sentiment that it is worth it if you have children. Mine have obviously flown the coup but I use it and so do my grandchildren. With all the modern gadgets cleaning/maintenence is not a problem. :) |
Re: Is a pool really worth it?
Does it cost a heck of a lot to have a "heated" pool, so the pool can have full usage 365 days per year?
Just curious, I'm one of the woosies who hates jumping into cold water! :scared: |
Re: Is a pool really worth it?
We have a solar heated pool, decent sort of size, its not too bad on costs, the thing that uses up a lot of electric is the solar if its too cold too really heat it up much and then it can be chugging along for hours doing nothing really. Ours is set on winter mode at the moment.
Ours is salt so a sack of salt a month I reckon, got rid of the pool guy after he last cleaned the pool and it looked better if I did it myself, take a water sample now to Clark Rubber in Joondalup. Topping up with water, not much of a problem, our water bills are tiny so that dodesn't bother us. The only annoying thing has to be having a vast expanse of water in your garden you can't use for half the year. We can't really get in it until late October early November and then by April its too cold for us. Hope this helps Jenny |
Re: Is a pool really worth it?
Jenny,
Very nice answer, thankyou! You wouldn't happen to know a ball park figure would you, as to how much it would cost per month to run a heated pool like your would you? On average, if I kept aside money every month for a heated pool, that was nice and warm all the time, would it cost a hell of a lot, plus the cost of maintenance etc...is it a rich mans dream only? EDIT: Oops, never finished my post! Wuold it make sense to have an indoor pool or is it always better to have an outdoor pool if you want full 12 months per year usage out of it? |

In my opinion a pool is really worth it even for only the three months over Summer. My reasoning is based on the use the children get out of it. I had a year in a rental and summer was a pain heading down to the public pool and being twice as hot by the time we got home. Ok we also have the beach nearish - 20 mins in the car. But the pool was used most days in summer after school with the kids right into the evening when they would have a dip late on to cool down. I know it can be expensive we are just planning to refurbish our old one at a cost of around $8K but still rate it as a worth while expense. Check out your electricity running costs - lots of people can run the pool pump less in Winter but as you are living in a rental they will set the timer still for 8-12 hours a day as it is your electricity not their cost. Heating helps extend the summer months use of a pool as does a cover but those are additional things to think about. I will be honest and tell you I do not use it much personally and would possibly consider just a spa when the kids leave home. Cheers We have a liner and a sand filter and its not too much at all. I add chemicals once a year - normally at the end of the season when the weather change seems to get too much and a bunch of chlorine a few times a week. In winter, I run the pump once a week. In summer, I have a quick clean, test and skim as soon as I get home from work - quite a good wind down. I do all the testing myself - apart from the more esoteric tests which Clark Rubber incidentally do quite well - and they sell good stuff and accessories. |

Having a solar pool does extend the amount of time your pool is usable, but it doesn't work all the time! The roof temp has to be more than your pool temp for it to work. The last pool guy I saw said unless your roof is showing over 30° its not worth putting it on as it will be on all day trying to get your pool up to temp. Plus it can take several days to finally reach the required temp. Our electric I suppose is around $180 a quarter, I would think half of that is pool, remember if you have solar you in theory have 2 pool pumps both doing different jobs. in summer we put about $30 worth of salt and additives in as well each 3-4 weeks. We did buy a blanket for the pool, which is good but when you want it to save water and chemicals its the middle of summer and you are using it everyday so a pain in the arse to keep rolling on and off a pool cover (especially if like us its a bendy shaped pool) Thinking of the future we would probably go for a larger straight pool that you can actually do laps in, so a blanket would be more easy to use, ours has a spa bit in it as well which is nice, but obviously useless in the middle of winter. Roll on summer when the pool reaches over 25° instead of its chilly 17° it is now! and thats only got higher in the last 2 weeks! it was 13°! Jenny |
