Love our pool it gets used for about 6 months of the year, cost of running and maintainance is very little i think we spent about $100 last year on salt and chemicals max and probably about $10 a week running the pump & creepy, the pool was a big decider when we purchased the house, a big thumbs up from us, we also live about 5 mins from the beach and only get there on sundays when taking the dogs to the beach.
Its great having a pool on our doorstep

We use our pool 7-8 months of the year, virtually everyday me and my boy swim, and muck about in the water.
It was in when we bought around 5 yrs ago, and the house has A/C which i might add has been used maybe a couple of times in that period.......

As for looking after, they are simple.......no hassle at all...and the running expense, well to be fair i'm not sure because we've always had it, but suffice to say it will be a lot cheaper than running the A/C......

Theres nothing better after a long day at work than having a swim, cold beer and relaxing....life couldnt be better

I have been looking for rental places and places to buy in Perth. Is there a reason so few houses have a pool? It seems only a small portion have a pool.

Does it add a huge amount to the house price having a pool?

In most places, having a pool adds little or nothing to the value of the house (and in cooler climates can actually reduce the value).

If you really want a pool, it's best to buy a house with one already in place, as long as you don't let a realtor persuade you it's worth paying more for the house compared to similar houses without pools. Installing a pool is expensive, hence much cheaper to buy a house with one.

If you are looking at such a house, bear in mind that many buyers will avoid a house with a pool, for a variety of reasons. So when you negotiate on price, keep this in mind (and remember same thing will happen when you go to sell the property).

Also look into what has happened in the area during times of water restrictions. Are you sure you will be able to keep filling it with water?

And if you buy a house with pool (or build one), make sure you factor the annual maintenance cost into your budget.

I wonder if Pools are as necessary in Brisbane or further North, as they are in Perth. I can fully believe that they a sought after addition to a house in Perth, as there would have to be more emphasis on entertaining at home in Perth than the other Aus Cities, plus the weather helps that cause.

You definitely couldnt have one without heating in Melbourne, and even heating a Spa is expensive.

I'm not too sure what point you are trying to make here, but the further north from Brisbane you go, the more hotter and humid it is!

Pool!! We're in Brissie - no kids, but 2 swimming dogs - and my first summer here would've been horrible without one. In summer, half an hour of soaking in the cold easily gave me a few hours of not suffering the heat!

Ours isn't heated, so it only gets used 6 months of the year and I STILL wouldn't be without it. We take a bottle of water to the local shop every fortnight and bung in more salt / chlorine; really not a hassle to maintain...
