Can you post some links of what swim spas are please. May just be what we're looking for.

Thanks.

Something like these?

Coming from the UK and living in QLD a pool was a big thing for us and our second house here has one.

Agree with a previous poster on the size of garden and with 3111 sq metres of land ours does not take up much of the Garden. We have seen gardens that are basically a pool which does not really seem to work.

On a warm day relaxing in your pool surrounded by Palm trees you do tend to think you got something right. Our child and friends spend plenty of time in it and for that reason alone feel it is worth it.

The maintainence from a time point of view is not that bad and we have plenty of leaves but it is expensive to run and we have replaced a pump and chlorinator in the last two years.

For us if you have children aged between say six and sixteen we would go out of our way to get a pool as it certainly enhances their lifestyle but with no kids would probably prefer not to have a pool because of the cost issues given how little it would get used in practice.

Every body is different and on another note we have been in this house nearly three years and have not had to put a single drop of water in the pool, the rain has done the job for us.

My OH has always been dead against a pool, especially if you live near a beach. However, when we built the new house and I started mentioning having a spa, to my amazement he suggested a pool instead. It's not huge, as we wanted to still have a good amount of space for the kids to run around in, but it's a godsend during Perth's hot weather. We use it from October to April and we don't have any heating in it, although the plumbing's there for solar heating if we want it later. We also opted for a non-chlorine system. Yes, there are running costs and maintenance, but it's fantastic for cooling off and for playing in. I also exercise in it and have got those elastic tether things to provide resistance. We don't have aircon, so the pool's important in preventing meltdown.

Everyone I know who has a pool regrets it due to the maintennance and fact unless you have kids you rarely use it. They say that rather than adding value to a house it takes it away as a prospective buyer would be put off if a pool was installed. However, coming from the UK it's always part of the dream for my first house here. I'm very undecided.

I'm in Sydney, and for me it is pool all the way!

Couldn't survive the Summer without it.

We heat with solar to extend the swimming season.

Unless you are close to the beach I couldn't imagine being in Perth and not having one.

But yes, maintenance, cleaning, bloody leaves, they do take some looking after, and the pool guys charge the earth for chemicals that cost a few pennies: I just paid nearly $30 for a 15 litre drum of pool acid :-(

So how much does it cost to run a pool I wonder. I've got a Ozone filtrated Spa, which I keep heated. It's an American Sundance brand, it has brilliant insulation. I'd say it costs me circa 65 to 80 bucks per month to keep heated. I only heat it to 30 degrees. We dont use it a hell of a lot, probably once a month these days, because we can never find time. Probably use it a bit now we are on holidays so I may turn it up to 34.. Instead of using the proper ozone chemicals I've learned to use those 5 in one tabs, and split them in Quarters and drop a quarter in after we've used it. Last time I bought one of those was last year, and there are 3 tabs left. So the chemical running costs are really cheap.

Everyone I know who has a pool loves it.

What I do get fed up with is the amount of pool parties I need to either hold or go to.....:D

We keep the pool heated to 30 degrees 9 months pf the year and I say it costs about that, that's with a heat pump on off peak.

Must admit I think a pool is a waste of time without heating.

Serious question, what made you put in a pool but not aircon? Got me completely buggered.

Just like you don't need a pool when you live near the beach, you also don't need aircon, because you've got the sea breeze, says my Aussie OH:lol:. Of course, he forgot about those days when it's so hot that there's no sea breeze even if you stand in the waves:rolleyes:. I was also told that aircon also uses up a lot of power, so it's expensive and environmentally unfriendly.

To be fair, it doesn't help you acclimatize if you're in aircon all the time at home as well as in the car, because there will be times when you can't hide from the heat.

So on those hot Perth days, and there are an awful lot of them, we're in and out of the pool as much as possible. At night, we use fans. I also fantasize about climbing into the freezers at the supermarkets, or rolling around in snow:o.
