not sure if sand is the same as DE? (new to this pool lark)
but when I went into clark rubber to get the water checked he said DE was the best you could have....
hope that is some help.... also, have a look for a thread i posted recently about leaking pool - someone on there owns a pool shop so might be better informed.

As far as I know (probably not much) Sand are no better than Cartridge. I prefer cartridge simply because they don't need backwashing and so don't waste water.

I think DE filters are better supposedly than cartridge filters, especially if you get a load of crap in the pool but they are higher maintenance in time (the back wash is easy, it is cleaning the filter rods that is a pain). Sand filters are good apparently and relatively low maintenance but are bulky. One option to improve the cartridge filter system especially if you geta lots of rubbish in the pool si to put a cyclone unit before the cartridge filter which spins out all the larger bits prior to going into the filter and uses less water to clean, we are thinking of going down this route after our DE filter packed in.

Mine bust at the weekend too, the ring lock on top leaks and then I snapped the pressure relief valve off.... just ordered a new one from these guys:
