no - most of the houses were brand spanking new
Don't mind combined as long as our next place has an en-suite. The kids (when eventually there will be more than 1) can fight it out over the 'family' bathroom' Although hubbie could do with his own toilet, maybe at the bottom of the garden :D

Thanx to everyone for your comments & especially to louise, moneypen & bridie for the laugh :D .

I did point out to him last night when he posted that he should have perhaps clarified that he meant a door between the kitchen & the rest of the house, not one out to the garden/outside, but it seems that most people got the general idea. I did also wonder if he had made it a multiple choice, so people in Australia could post about both countries. Obviously not .

Looks like we wont be having a kitchen door then (or even 3 of them, since there are 3 doorways ;) ) http://69.93.183.37/897/124/emo/woohoo.gif . Ohh hang on - that's what I had decided anyway :p :D .

And on the tangent, never had a house until the last one that had a combined bathroom/toilet. Always a seperate room. This one has a seperate toilet & we're planning on combining them.

Go figure ;) .

I grew up in a place where the toilet was in the same place as bath. Bugger.

It would seem nonsense now to have a washing machine in the kitchen.
Almost unheard of. I remember a family we knew in 1987 with a utility room - wow- amazing. That and a long seperate freezer in the back was like wow++.

Funny, I was reading an article in this months "House & Garden" that Dagboy pointed out to me that said that the trend here in Australia now is to get rid of utility rooms or laundries & instead incorporating laundries into kitchens, bathrooms & hallway cupboards.

Im definitely not a trendsetter then :scared: :eek: I love my huge laundry :) .

As for the toilet/bathroom thing, on reflection, here in Australia anyway, most bog standard (excuse the pun :D ) 3x1 or 4x2 houses have a seperate toilet & bathroom & then a toilet in the ensuite bathroom (which is usually very small). It seems to mainly be in larger houses (that therefore have a larger bathrooms) that the toilet in the bathroom is more common.

UK - doors on most kitchens, except for my grandparents home - which is open plan which joins dining and living - with archways - built in the 30's/40's

my parents - Toilet - separate to bathroom.
Hubby's mum home toilet in bathroom ( built in the very late 1700's I believe - but renovated inside to include toilet in bathroom around the 60's ), hubby's father's home ( built in the 60's) - toilet separate. grandparents toilet in bathroom built in the 30's/ 40's ,all homes friends, relatives etc - toilets some separate or in bathroom in the UK - toss a coin , old and new

Aus:

toilets - separate not in bathrooms ( brand new home) except in ensuite bathroom ( which is a large bathroom contain a big spa bath. a double shower, washbasin and a toilet with room to swing twenty cats - the pleasures of designing your own home - we designed a big ensuite on purpose - I love my bathroom - hubby gets sentenced to the "common bathroom" :)) . one of our previous homes here ( about twenty years old) - toilet in bathroom - old and new - it really is toss a coin

toilets in bathrooms are unhygienic, apparently "they" ( I love these "they" people) tested toothbrushes that's sitting in one of these bathroom/toilets - the toothbrushes pick up particles in the air - you don't want to know - totally disgusting.


kitchens all been open plan here in Aus - doors on kitchen do I want them - yes! I wish we had designed doors on the kitchen when building - for one reason, b*stard cats jumping up on shelves. I hate having animals in the kitchen .

washing machines in Kitchens - unhygienic, dirty clothes around food. I'm keeping the laundry room, and certainly will have one in the uk too whether I have to build one or not. I hate washing machines in kitchens.

Apparently ( The "they" people again lol) - someone who is in the restaurant trade can tell me if this is true or not , but I have always been led to believe in the UK you can not have a washing machine where food is being prepared in a restaurant - it is against health and safety laws, but yet you have washing machines in your houses in the kitchens.

It's practical to have bathroom, sink, and toilet in separate areas. Then people can do three separate things at once :D

My kitchen has a door between it and the Dining room, and another between it and the hallway, but nothing between it and the family room (2nd living room for those not in the know :) )

You've just had me counting my room doors :D 15 !! and that doesn't include the main entry doors !

Ohhhh I watched that episode!!!

I couldnt believe they kept brushing their teeth through the experiment that were sitting right by the loo.....~gagging~

I have to add to this that the only time I have ever had a toilet in a bathroom was as an ensuite until I moved to the UK.

When I look at houses I would discount moving in if it had a toilet in the bathroom(mainly if there is only 1 bathroom). I cant think of anything more revolting personally.

As for kitchen doors, currently we have 2 doorways, one an archway - no door and one a doorway with a door. But we are living in a unit. Most houses I have ever lived in here in Oz didnt have kitchen doors.

My last house in the UK had an ensuite, but no toilet in it !

There was one in the main bathroom, as well as a WC downstairs. The ensuite consisted of Shower and sink only.

Nope, other than spending time trying to look up toxic fumes from flyscreens :D

I'm actually surprised at the number of UK kitchens without doors (36% so far). I've never lived in a house in UK that didnt have a kitchen door.
