War comes a bit too close for careful plumber
July 31 2003
A plumber carried a World War II bomb across a Melbourne backyard after he found it under a client's house.
The aerial practice bomb, with 1941 stamped on top, was discovered yesterday in a crate underneath floorboards at the Mont Albert North home.
Mark Dawson, who recently bought the property from a widow, said the plumber was using heavy drilling equipment and a gas torch when he spotted the device.
"We saw him come crawling out with a box in his hands," Mr Dawson told ABC radio.
Mr Dawson said police brought in army ammunition technicians to remove it.
"The plumber had actually carried it out and placed it in the backyard away from the house - which I greatly appreciated, but the issue of his sanity had come into question a couple times since," Mr Dawson joked.
Defence spokesman Peter Meehan said the 5.2-kilogram bomb was probably inert, but would be tested today.
The plumber, who had a hangover, had gone home to bed, Mr Dawson said.
