Hi
I am in the process of applying to emigrate and my husband has criminal convictions. These are more recent than yours, and we have been advised that they should not be a problem. I think therefore that you will be ok as long as you are open and honest when you make your applications.
It may also be worth getting advice from a migration agent who will give you tips on how best to describe your conviction, and on extra steps to take when sending your police clearance which will support your application. Our agent has been very helpful on this topic so I would be happy to recomend them to you.
They are Ambler Collins (contact Nicky or Sinead) (http://www.amblercollins.com/ac/index.htm).
Good luck with your application!
Regards
Mel

Re: "Try the French Foreign Legion, they are about as particular as Aus but they may have a few openings once the Yanks have their way with the Frogs."
Why does this comment and the others from this poster smack of good old PB - could it be a cousin?

Hope so then they won't breed. They took no notice of the "Please don't hi-jack the threads" request but that would need intelligence would it not?
It does seem from this thread and several others that the Police checks are able to accept several different 'crimes' and still give clearance for australia - which is good for those who were 'mad' teenagers etc. Don't be down hearted - as someone said Be Honest in the forms.

So it really is simple enough for ALL on this forum with no need at all for any worry or hand wringing, state "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". In essence the matter is in the hands of the police and immigration so WHY WORRY ABOUT IT???

They are not too bothered with a bit of "previous" but they will blow you out if they think you have conections to organised crime.

Does anyone know when my convictions will be considered spent - it's now 8 years and still show up on Police Record

I think they show up for 10 years on the police check BUT the paperwork says that when applying no convictions are considered spent and it would therefore be safer to own up at the start because if they are discovered later it could lead to your visa being revoked.
I did all the TRA and the visa application myself but I really would say to you use a good agent who has experience of this type of application. I know it's an expense we could really do without but look at it as an investment for you and your families future.
Wishing you good luck with your application and to all the others sitting in judgement.........get real, nobody is perfect and there by the grace of god go a lot of us!!

Don't panic....easy to say I know but I remember reading an article that showed 6 out of the top earners in the UK had actually spent time inside
Richard Branson
Guiness Bro's etc.
So if they can get a second chance why not us!
Set yourself a realistic target of getting your visa, if the timescales quoted are anything to go by your probably looking at 20 months + a bit for the extra checks they may want to make.
Keep positive, I don't know how, but you got to try
