please be my friend...!!
who like us are hoping to have a better social circle in oz..
its one of the reasons that we are moving over there, but i suppose its not mentioned much as everyone likes to feel they are billy loads of mates..
reading another thread today it seems that we may not be the only ones..
it must be a real problem not having anyone to socialise with in oz,when you have been Mr and Mrs popular here in england..but then if you where ...
why would you go??

Me and the missus dont really have much of a circle of friends, plenty of aquantantcies, but not friends. Its not that im a horrible person but personally i dont feel the need for friends to be popping round every 5 minutes.I'm hoping this will stand us in good stead for aussie as we cant really miss what we dont have !
Although after saying all of the above,i would love to meet new people in aus amd have some new experiences....is'nt that what its all about ??
ohh and yes aston i'll be your mate

i know what you mean.
Ive had the stages where we had friends virtually living our lives for us i found it suffocating.
Im a sociable person but also value time on my own.
where i live i say hello to people but dont do the you must pop round for coffee, unless i really do want them to pop in.
Ive seen a few people fake freindships, invite people round for coffee then the next day over hear them slag the person they invited off. Only doing it cos we want to borrow their lawn mower (for eg)
I have some very good friends who live miles away from me and every time we meet its like we never been apart its not very often.
I value freind ship and through Be have made some lovley people who i happily call friends and hope to meet up with them either in the UK of in oz
Aston with BE you will always have friends

Re: please be my friend..
We have found ourselves in a situation where we have plenty of family around us but no friends.
We have moved about a bit and so have lost touch with people.
We've got one couple we are friendly with but they live 100 miles away so we only see them once or twice a year.
So yes - we are hoping to meet others in the same boat in Australia and widen our social circle.
Add us to your list of new mates Aston

Being a villa fan you may find it hard ...... but to be honest things will just fall in to place. You have no divine right to meet people but your own personal skills prevail and you meet people who are in the same situation or who have been and you just expand from there. Don't worry it will all work out OK. Quill.

I'll still be your friend too M, but it will have to be a longer distance friendship than it is now as your heading for Perth and I'll be a 4 hour flight away on the Gold Coast..................... C x

Re: please be my friend..
Take a look at what it says under my avatar then ask if I want to be friends with anyone. While it is easy to meet people here, it is not easy getting to know anyone very well. So, I'll absolutely be your friend.

Everybody hates me

It is said that Austalians don't do socialising in the house, they sit in the garage if they have mates round and drink !! and yes I have witnessed this or they go to the pubs.
We didn't have a great circle in the Midlands either, people we knew and that was enough I guess, we too like our own lives, but we have found it quite different here, everyone says hello and waves and you do get invited to things, but they are usually expat communities.
I guess when you start work you will have the usual banter there with them all, but I guess it will all fall into place soon, only been here since September, but let me know when you are over, at least hubby will have a familiar accent for you as he is originally from Brum too.
Regards Kim

He he he! If I see OH sat in the garage with his new Aussie mates I will PMSL!
On the plus side, at least they wouldn't trash the house! (Wonder if that is how it started, with the 'Sheilas' banning their dirty men from the house?!)
If it makes any one feel any better when I arrive in Oz next year I will know a) my OH, who has a job to go to so will be out all the time any way, and b) the dog, who is cuddly but not the best for conversation. So I will be happy to be friends with ANY ONE!

Yes most people here seem to socialise in their homes, BBQ's and all that.
I prefer a in a pub myself, but they are pretty much spread out here and not many of them hence why the socialising goes on in a garden..
You have to put yourself out and about to make friends i have found.
We have met loads of people but obviously not everyone is our taste or us theirs....
