I did wonder other than in the first 5 minutes the family had been quizzed about what housing and areas they really wanted!??
They went to Berwick and Eltham and the family were looking glum. The presenter finally asked where they wanted to be - Mornington Peninsula - completely opposite direction!:rofl:

Im pretty new to this forum and am becoming dissillusioned by the small amount of people whom seem to enjoy turning every thread into a personal insult or sarcastic comment.
They are ruining it for the majority. There are some excellent points being made on this thread as we were spun the "its much cheaper than the UK" prior to visiting last May and the daily living costs were a big shock, no thanks to the "wanted down under spin".
Read the comments and do your homework twice.

TV programmes such as Place in the Sun and New Life Down Under should be watched with the sound on mute. Treat them as postcard shows and you won't go far wrong.

I guess you have got to cast you mind back in the days when you were in the UK and dreaming of a better life. And on the whole it is... no complaints here, sure there are things you don't like and the shows do make things look a whole lot simpler. They are telling you things you want to hear. Everyone escapes here for different reasons... the ones who get here and bitch were probably trying to escape something that was never going to change in their life and were fundamentally unhappy and always will be. It does not matter what a pint milk is... tailor the budget accordingly. All too easy to criticize.

I came back to the UK from Australia to at least work a while. The reasons, you may wonder?

I am an Australian citizen now (2006), but something to me has profoundly changed in the Australian way of life and psyche since I moved there in 2001. It is not the same feel to the place, and people have become very greedy and out for themselves!. God I HATE money, housing etc etc and the side effects it has had on communities. I work in the public sector and always will as this is what I believe in. Without us the greedy people will crumble. Lets hope in 2009 they do!. It's the recession we had to have.

Anyhows, Perth, where I was, is gradually becoming too hard to find a decent rental apartment at a decent price - i.e. $AU300 per week for anything resembling decent. They are dog boxes there, and around 15 sets of people 'bidding' for one place etc. FACT. I could not be arsed. With lack of decent jobs in my field too, I thought well, why not go back to UK for a while - I am luck, I don't have kids to think about which would be a HUGH factor for many people. In addition, I do not mind paying for something decent in a city where something is actually happening - but Perth it is NOT, unless you have a young family etc, then it is a pretty good place I think to bring up kids I reckon. Back to the fact that everyone is different at different times I reckon. I really wish those bloody irritating TV programs would show aspects other than young couples and families!. grrrrrr.

Anyhows, I was offered good work in my field back in the UK on TWICE the money, good prospects, attitudes that sit in 2008, not in Perth (where it really is 1988!) and I arrived back into London last month and things felt alot cheaper than Australia if the truth be told - day to day things. Was out in central London, and went for a coffee or something I think, and it was way cheaper. Toiletries and food, again, way cheaper (and MUCH better choice may I add). Transport more pricey that is for sure, but ho hum. Second hand cars in UK - way cheaper. In Australia, please nobody buy a second hand car, you are being HAD!. GO for new and Japanese!. European cars there are much mor exi than the UK due to the import distance (apparently). Alcohol is way cheaper in the UK.

The UK has the added bonus that people engage with each other, there is history, FREE museums etc. Loads to do here.

ONE single thing that irritates me about is Australia, and esp Perth, is the incongruent GREED and the almighty dollar!. Hideous!. There is a great divide in Perth not, and there are alot of people who have simply been left behind in the boom times.

Be warned, unless you wish to go quite far out of Perth city, it is very tricky to get something decent for housing now! Be prepared and do your research!

Agreed. I'm still in the UK and dreaming of a life in Oz makes my day that little bit better :o

I know these shows make things out to be perfect - but reading all the moaning/depressing posts from those now living in Australia brings a good balance ( ;) ).

As I'm the one that first commented on the inaccuracy of these programmes I feel the need to say that I am not "bitching" about anything or anyone other than misinformation. I don't want to put anybody off coming here but I would like to think that you base your decision on realistic information, and there are plenty of people here willing to spend their time sharing their experiences.

Just the last few days I and others have been trying to help another member work out how much she needs for set-up expenses, for example; that's not criticising, it's helping. I have the karma to prove it. :lol:

BTW I ran away from nothing, didn't come here from the UK, and am very happy here, thanks. When I'm not, I'll move on.
