The future is services like i-tunes where songs can be bought for 99c. The price is still too high but the mainstream market would rather pay a small amount than be on the dodgy side of the law.
File sharing in Canada is now legal and the purchase of any CDR, DVD R, MP3 player, ipod etc etc attracts a tax which goes to the music industry. The current business model for the music industry will become outdated and record shops will become novelty boutiques. What will change is the marketing of music and the method of distribution. As bandwidth becomes cheaper more movies will also be copied across the net. In the near future TV over broadband will become the norm and the traditional national boundaries and regulations will become irrelevant. |
