Rego is basically tax and the pink slip is for road-worthiness. (Green slip is third party insurance and belongs to the car not the person so would be transferred when buying second hand)

My hubby used to be a car salesman (aargh!) and says "if the car is 3 years old or over then it needs a pink slip (like an MOT certificate). However 4WD vehicles need to get a pink slip every year from new."

Was that a yes . . . or a no?
Sorry . . . what was the question?

Re: Pink slip - resolve a family argument!
NSW and it's a Toyota 4 Runner. So if we were looking to buy it we shouldn't touch it unless a pink slip is produced? Is it a legal requirement to get one? If I went to the garage and got a mechanic to give it a once over before purchasing and was happy with the result do I still need one?

In NSW, I have never heard about the rules being different for 4x4 and standard cars:
If there are registration plates on the vehicle, you must be given a Safety Inspection Report or ‘pink slip’ that’s not more than 42 days old by the seller.
If the vehicle has been registered within the last month, you don’t need a pink slip - so I guess if you have 12 months rego this applies and you don't need one.
Note you must transfer the registration into your name within 14 days at the RTA office...here you will be charged some nice stamp duty...if you don't change the rego in 14 days, you have to pay an excess charge when you do.
Dont forget that if you are buying a car with non-NSW plates in NSW..then you will have added problems of having to may be get a full road worthy check done and other problems.
Dont take the 'pink slip' as any gurantee of the soundness of the vehicle..the test is much less than the British MOT. In my camper van the guy just checked the lights, tyres and wippers. He gave me a brake test report even though he never took it anywhere near his brake testing machine!

We're going to get an independent mechanic check before buying.
