What does Perth do with it's wastewater? Discharge it to the sea I bet. Can't be too much of a crisis if you can afford to waste water like that.

None of that is a big deal. Phoenix Arizona is in the desert and is as big as Sydney. Citizens of Phoenix don't waste water on grass, they have local flora in their gardens that doesn't need a lot of water.

Permanent problems
PERMANENT water restrictions are not the answer (Plan to restrict water, 21/7). The problem is that State governments have never had any real intentions of actually working towards solving the problem of Perth's limited and at times dwindling water supplies.
One need only look to the north and the south of the city to see how quickly Perth's suburbs are growing in number and understand the drain, excuse the pun, that this is placing on our water supplies.
We are now told there is a suggestion from Independent MP Phillip Pendal that we should be restricted - permanently. Our only compensation would be a pat on the back and told that we have matured as water users. Mind you, this maturity is due only to "the several years of ad hoc water restrictions having prepared WA's 678,000 residential customers for permanent restrictions".
Governments have never engaged in solving the problem. Does anyone remember any media reports outlining how a government is going to use new technologies to improve our water supplies? Of course not, and this is something we all need to be concerned about.
Governments should act creatively and offer us at least some hope that we will have something to drink in 10 years.
