Just out of curiosity, is it only the larger store's that can't open late?
Do you have things like 'on the run' (24/7 petrol station with a few food places etc in) or does the local small chemist stay open until 9:30pm like in SA? Can smaller retailers open more often, or do they have to close at 6pm too?
What about Sunday? do none of the shopping centre's open at all? or do they open for a limited period of time?
I've always wondered to what extent the ' Perth is shut' thing went to
Same question to you QLD'ers too

We already have Sunday trading, in the CBD anyway, and also in quite a few suburbs. Smaller retailers like IGA are open until 8/9pm every day anyway and some other small shops/bakeries are also open Sundays. Perth is not as dead as some people think

This story here is about MAJOR retail stores throughout the Perth metropolitan area which will be able to stay open until 9pm on weeknights under legislation passed by state parliament.

This is a complete waste of time maybe Sunday trade for certain centre's but evening will not work.
I work in retail in a big shopping centre people are given the extra trading hours for Xmas we emply extra staff only to close at 6.30-7pm as NObody is out shopping besides the Thursday night.
I do think places like Woolworths and Coles till 7pm let people get shopping after work but otherwise no need for it.

Holy shit - didn't realise that was the law in Perth. I live in semi-rural NSW and we've got 24 hour supermarkets, kmarts, petrol stations and restaurants down here.

Well I hope you get it because your life will drastically improve and there will be no detrimental side effects at all. Literally nothing to lose at all, and you get to sit outside in the summer until 2030 or even later in the light.

The problem to-date has been the state government prohibiting retail from operating beyond 5pm monday to friday. That has been relaxed in some respect by the tourist zone classification but this change in the law will now allow retail to make their own mind up. In my opinion the law does not go far enough. It should allow retail to open to, say, 8pm every night of the week. By giving retail the choice they can vote with their feet and if it becomes profitable for the few it won't take long before more join in. But bear in mind that what we the customer see as a benefit is not necessarily seen int he same light by those working in retail. When previously you had Sundays off you may find that replaced with a weekday.
