Thanks people, so SOR seems to be cheaper. What are the beaches like SOR compared to NOR?
Thanks for the Air Cadet link HelenTD Is driving to the city considered a no go then? Sorry for these questions but I am having a second interview on Monday and will have to speed up our desicion on where to live initially. Not a no-go, but if you drive into the CBD be prepared to pay high carparking charges if you want to park in the CBD itself, unless your job comes with a reserved space. Its generally $20-25 per day for the cheaper carparks (Central Park is $40 per day) Quite a few people park up in Northbridge and then walk in (its about a 5-10 min walk depending where you will be in the CBD. |

Perth -Joondalup train 25 mins
[url]http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au Although Perth - Joondalup train itself may take 25 mins, you also have to factor in the journey at each end. Train station to CBD is 5-15 walk depending where you are in the CBD. Home to train station, could be another 5-15 mins maybe more depending on station proximity to house, plus time to park at station, get ticket etc. Realistically Joondalup would be a 45 min total commute, assuming everything runs smoothly. |

Re: Perth NOR or SOR?
This is really good info the sort of stuff I was hoping for thanks. I have been looking around the forum and found a post refering to a 30 min train journey from Clarkson (near Quinns Rock) to the city. Is this evan possible or is there a different train for this journey?
This is really hard just looking at a map and trying to decide where to place yourself initially. We watched a re-run of Phil down under last night and really like the look of the Quinns Rock house they showed but I am worried about commute times. |
Re: Perth NOR or SOR?
Try here Ed.
http://www.movetoperth.com/info/subu...es/quinns.html 35 mins by train is correct. we drove down again today right into perth it was only 20 minutes in the car at 11.40am;) |

What sort of things do you like doing as a family? The air cadet programme looks like it might be based at RAAF Pearce, which is to the north east of Perth - if you son wanted to go there every week, would you want to drive there from SOR? If you have to travel a lot to do the sort of things that you enjoy as a family, it can be a bit tiresome. It's better to live somewhere where you can do the things that you enjoy, if you can afford it. Quinns Rock is one of those suburbs that some people love and other people would steer clear of. A couple of years ago my son was playing football against the Quinns Rock side. Both he and my husband (and the other kids and parents) were amazed and disgusted by the language and poor sportmanship coming from the Quinns Rock parents and kids (under 11s at the time). Perhaps you need to stay in a holiday rental in one of the northern suburbs, such as Quinns, Mindarie, Clarkson or Butler, to get a feel for the place. You could then swap to go SOR and do the same for Rockingham, Mandurah, Port Kennedy or Secret Harbour, etc. It would give you the chance to test out the commuting experience as well, but you should do your testing during what would be your normal going to work/school time, not off-peak. If I'm in an unfamiliar suburb, I like to do a quick visit to the local supermarket - it gives me a good idea about a neighbourhood;). There are lots of choices of places on the www.stayz.com.au website and you might be able to negotiate a good deal. |

Clarskson is a little bit further out than Joondalup. Your total commute time to a CBD office will be just over the hour I reckon. (House - station - train - walk to office) Have you used the street view of maps.google.com.au? Its not quite the same as physically walking the streets, but it does give you a bit of a feel for how each of the areas look on first impression. |

I normally try and avoid threads like these but as we're looking to move I came across this map and though some might find it useful.

If you don't like the local state school, have you budgeted for private school fees, possibly for each of your 4 kids? That's if you can get places for them:fingerscrossed:.

Re: Perth NOR or SOR?
Its interesting what you are saying about Quinns.
What areas would recommend in this part of Perth then? I have been reading older posts but there is so much conflicting information, I realise all people have different opinions, but when you are the other side of the world you need to ask and ask again. We want to be close to the beach, however if we could get a larger property inland in a good area we would consider this. Once again thanks for the information so far. |

For 400-450k and 4/5 beds walking distance to the beach you'd probably have to come down as far as rockingham/ port kennedy and surrounding areas Havent been monitoring property prices west of the city... But i'm thinking youll be streyched to find much in an area that is universally thought ot be a"good" area for that.... Not with 4/5 bedrooms...
But dont start the rockingham debate again here.. PLEASE Meets your criteria but way more $$$$$ |
