Agreed. I currently use the train (and have done for 12months) into the CBD. The station is a 5min walk away (at either end).
We've just bought a house, and one of the requirements was near a train station. The new place is even closer. It's cheap ($2 each way), regular (every 15 mins), clean (no litter and eletric), fast (5 stops - 7mins) and air conditioned. People here moan about it, but compared to SouthWest Trains it's great. Busses are also an alternative, and can be combined with trains on the same fare. The best bet is to use Google Maps, use the "get directions" and click the public transport link - it'll give you timetables and show you the best routes. Perth station is a mess in the morning at the moment due to all the upgrade work, but it's a means to an end. Certainly no worse than London Bridge. |

I've also recently started using the train, as parking was costing me over $20 a day, and agree that the service is good. I drive to East Perth station, park for free and the 4 minute train journey costs me $1.40. I'm saving thousands a year.

Re: Perth Monthly Costs
Jeez, you people who only spend $2 or less on trains are lucky. My daily commute is over $11. More if I take the bus from home to Clarkson station.
I think I'm going to have to speak to the old man. He told me he takes West Coast Drive/Marmion because it's faster. Now I find out from Renth it's actually so he can ogle the chicks running. |

I'm lucky because my parking at Uni costs about $8 a week which means I get to drive to and from work along the coast road so I can check out all the honeys and the yummy mummies out jogging.
I start at Curtin next week - it's going to be major woody time. |

we manage on around 1200 a week and save a couple of hundred, that said it all depends on how you live, if you eat out a lot and have fancy tastes then you wil need more, the good thing about aus is you can do it cheap or dear, loads of stuff is free and doesnt have to cost a lot. i will say that a day out at the theme parks can cost a fortune so we use these days as treats, birthdays ect, same with eating out, we often take food down to the parks and have a cook up ect. good luck and enjoy it.

Hiya we too are a family of 5, our little ones are a bit younger than yours currently nearly 5 months, 2 and 6. We move out in Nov, leaving on the 5th!
Whereabouts are you heading to in Perth? We found a really good site, http://www.aussiemove.com/costofliving/ this breaks everything down. Good luck with your move! |

And $11 is hardly a lot now. I always knew I'd be working in the city, so there was no way I'd want to live that far out. I came back to Perth to avoid long commutes if I could. |
Re: Perth Monthly Costs
Nobody has added in motoring fines to the cost of living, I see. Better be careful :p
